The Many Types of Coffee Pots

By John Hilaire

The definition of a coffee pot is a vessel used to brew or make coffee. These come in many different styles and offer various ways to produce the desired brew.

Drip Maker

The most widely used coffee pot today is the drip maker. These work by placing coffee in a filter and placing it inside of the container which holds water. The water is heated and pumped through the coffee where it then drips into the pot below. Water temperature is controlled internally to maintain a temperature just below boiling. Boiling coffee tends to produce a bitter taste which is undesirable to most people. These drip pots come with many features which include clocks, alarms, and delayed timers. Most offer the benefit of setting the timer to go off about the time you usually get up in the morning. It is very pleasing to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Percolator

Another popular type coffee pot is the percolator. Percolators work by pumping water into the container holding the coffee until the desired result is achieved. The coffee stays in the same container in which it is brewed. A basket keeps the dry coffee from being deposited into the coffee container. Percolators were popular in the 1970s and 80s before the drip maker became the coffee maker of choice. Percolators are still used today to produce large quantities of coffee since the drip maker usually has a limit of twelve cups.

Vacuum

Many people still enjoy the tradition of vacuum coffee pots because the pots offer interesting shapes and designs. These pots work on the theory that steam creates a vacuum which draws the water and steam through the coffee grounds without distributing the grounds throughout the coffee. The process is similar to the percolator with the exception of the repeated pumping action required of the percolator.

Coffee Pot Safety

There were times when coffee pots were made with long cords which would reach from a good distance across the room. This became a hazard to children who were playing on the floor. Many young children were burned when they pulled the pot off in the floor and the coffee splashed on them. Today coffee pots usually come with a short cord that will only allow you to use it close to an electrical outlet. It is important that you not use an extension cord since this could allow small children to get hurt.

It is also important that your home coffee pot be equipped with a timer that will automatically shut off after a certain period of time, usually two hours. This could prevent a fire if you forget to turn the pot off before you leave the house. This feature can give you peace of mind when you remember half way through your day that you left the coffee pot on.

A Brief History About Canada Dry

By Angela Abbette

In the soft drink industry there is much competition. But one soft drink, has really stood the test of time, and it isn”t a cola. Canada Dry has been around for many years and supports a unique standard in the soft drink industry. Let”s take a bried look at Canada Dry, and what its origins entail.

Dry is one of those basic English words that have been around long enough to acquire all sorts of meanings only tangentially related to their primary definition, which in the case of dry pretty much amounts to “not wet.”

In a figurative sense, however, dry can mean, among other things, insensitive or unemotional, caustically witty (“dry humor”), barren or unfruitful, miserly, plain, unattractive, dull, stiff or overly formal, or, of course, very thirsty. Dry is even an American slang term applied to those locales that forbid the consumption or sale of alcohol.

A more pleasant sense of dry, dating back to at least 1700, is used among wine connoisseurs to mean “free from sweetness or fruity flavor,” which in many wines is a desirable attribute.

Now, fast-forward to Canada in 1904, where Toronto pharmacist and entrepreneur John J. McLaughlin was searching for a winning soft-drink formula to add to his line of bottled soda water. Most ginger ales of the day were syrupy concoctions, dark in color and extremely sweet. McLaughlin was looking for something brighter and lighter, and after many experiments he finally perfected his dream beverage. In 1919 he began exporting it to New York City as Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale, and within a few years established his first American factory in Manhattan. While most carbonated beverages at that time were sold through corner drugstores, McLaughlin pioneered distribution at ball games, beaches, and anywhere people gathered.

By the 1920s, Canada Dry had been acquired by P. D. Saylor and Associates and was on the verge of becoming a nationwide brand in the United States.

Ironically, it was one of the other meanings of the word dry-prohibiting the sale of alcoholthat gave Canada Dry its biggest boost. Canada Dry Ginger Ale turned out to be just right for disguising the often raw taste of home-brewed alcohol and became the mixer of choice during Prohibition. By the 1930s, Canada Dry had added several other varieties to its line and was on its way to global success.

So the next time you are at a cocktail party, and are using Canada Dry in a drink, you”ll have some trivia to add to the conversation. Cheers.

Asian Food Is Highly Popular And Is Made With Mold

By Jim Corkern

You can hardly find a person who does not like Asian food and anyone who enjoys soy sauce is not alone. In roughly two thousand years soy sauce has become one of the most popular and consumed condiments in history.

Soy sauce originated in Asia, because in ancient times Asians had to package meat and fish tightly in salt in order to preserve the meat and excess liquid would be drained as a result. The liquid, which has soaked in the meat and salts flavor, would be used as a seasoning for other foods, like noodles or rice.

However, when Buddhism began to rise in popularity, there was a shift from eating meat to eating vegetables and, therefore, the recipe for this seasoning also had to change. The recipe went to a salty paste of fermented grains. It was this recipe that became a prototype for soy sauce.

The recipe spread to Japan where it was modified and improved and a woman opened the worlds very first commercial brewery specializing in soy sauce. It was then that soy sauces popularity began to skyrocket.

Soy sauce, in the modern day, is made using mashed soy beans, wheat, salt, and a fermenting agent which is the very same kind as used in the production of sake, Aspergillus oryzae.

Aspergillus oryzae is a popular alternative. This mold is the most important ingredient in the making of soy sauce. It is this mold that makes it true soy sauce.

The previously mentioned Aspergillus oryzae is used in other things as well, such as Japanese rice wine. The mold is used to ferment rice that has been steam and milled down to around 50 percent of its original mass and weight in order to remove amino acids, proteins, and fats that can make the smell of the wine less than pleasant.

Sake brewers take the cultivation of this mold at the utmost seriousness, because the mold is capable of absorbing surrounding odors. The same goes for flavors. For example, if the wood of the brewing wood is cedar, a slight cedar flavor will be absorbed. The mold is helpful for precisely these reasons.

Sake and wine have a tendency to age in very different manners. Sake should be drunk almost as soon as it is purchased. While sake can, at times, taste better with age, it usually just tastes less than spectacular. Try some of these foods, You might find the you like them if you have not tried them.

What So Great About Popcorn Machines

By Ivanovich Cuxev

First it was that you only got popcorn in movie theaters, and then as a child you might remember making popcorn with oil in a big pan. After microwaves became all the rage there came microwave popcorn. It is obvious that as a society we love our popcorn. That is why having a popcorn machine is not at all unpractical anymore, and is actually becoming increasing popular to do so. With the influx of media rooms and bonus rooms where people like to lounge around and watch movies with their family and friends, having a popcorn machine that can make large batches of popcorn seems perfectly reasonable.

What is so great about these popcorn machines is that they are large enough to make popcorn for several people, but small enough that they are easy to use and clean. You will feel like you are at the movie theater but yet you never have to leave your home. There is nothing better than inviting your friends over to sit and watch the latest flick, or spend a full day watching a movie marathon. Movie watching really is not complete without popcorn!

If you have a media room of your own then you absolutely need to buy a popcorn machine. Although typical microwave popcorn, even the movie theater butter kind is fine, a real popcorn machines makes the popcorn taste exactly as it does in the movie theater. You can make it with extra butter if you like, low salt, or even special toppings such as caramel or Parmesan cheese. You can have any flavor you like, and there are so many of them to choose from.

Never again will there not be enough butter, or too much salt on your popcorn. Never again will you have to season your own popcorn with the bottles that they give you at the end of the counter at the movie theater. With your own popcorn machine you can make the popcorn that you like, when you would like it.

Popcorn machines come in a range of sizes that fit every budget. From the modern deluxe popcorn machine to the quaint and old fashioned popcorn machine you can even find a popcorn machine to fit your particular decorative style so that it looks very natural in the room. Your friends will be so jealous when they come over to watch movies or even play games. Again, they are very easy to clean as well, so it will not be a big mess when they leave. Popcorn machines add more than a little atmosphere to your media room, and it makes your friends and family feel like they are truly sitting inside of a multiplex cinema!

What So Great About Gourmet Coffee

By Ivanovich Cuxev

There is something so relaxing and lazy about sitting at a table having an aromatic cup of coffee. It is hard to stop at one cup that is for certain. However, coffee isn”t what it used to be. Since gourmet coffee has hit the shelves it is not longer just something to you do just to perk you up in the morning, it something you drink to enjoy the taste and irresistible flavor of these incredibly made coffees.

People who do not drink coffee often wonder what is so great about gourmet coffee. They ask whether it is made a certain way or it is the taste that lures you in. In fact, it is both reasons. Gourmet coffee is made from very high quality ”Arabica” coffee beans that are hand picked and thoroughly checked over to makes sure they are superior. Unlike commercial coffees that are machine graded, people that are experienced in gourmet coffee beans will be able to see if there is any dirt, leaves, or anything else in the beans that will spoil the taste.

The gourmet coffee beans are then treated with special oils after the roasting process which is what gives it the special flavor that is so tempting to drink. It is a blend of natural oils that are used for the coffee bean treatment. These oils are able to sustain a healthy shelf life without ever spoiling or losing it”s characteristic flavors once mixed with the blend of your favorite type of gourmet coffee. The oils and the flavors neutralize each other so you get a very smooth taste without any overpowering blend.

Gourmet coffee is then roasted in a way that customizes the coffee for your taste. Using a light roast, you will contain the natural aroma without the overcooked taste that you find in many of the traditional coffees. Arabic coffee beans are ground perfect fineness to give you the best taste that you can have in a full bodied cup of coffee. There are gourmet coffees that use a more coarser grind to give a completely different taste. It is up to your personal preference as to which level of fineness gives you the best cup of coffee.

Finer grinds are similar to those found in espresso which has a great rich taste, but most gourmet coffee lovers will lean towards the coarse ground coffee powder. That gives the grinds time to mix with the hot water and really pull out the flavor completely, especially when made with drip type filters. What makes Arabica gourmet coffee so great is that the Arabica coffee beans are never stored in a warehouse so after harvesting, roasting, and grinding they go very quickly to the store in which you buy them.

What makes gourmet coffee so great is the way the taste makes you feel. There is no burnt flavor or heavy after taste. It is just pure delight when you drink in the fragrant, warm, and rich taste of gourmet coffee.

Growing Organic Coffee Means A Cleaner And More Efficient Environment

By John Hilaire

Not all coffee beans are grown in environments that consist of huge commercial coffee plantations that are located in remote places in far off southern Latin American countries and it is also another common assumption that growing coffee requires plenty of sunshine as well.

There are however different kinds of coffee crops that grow under different conditions and which use different procedures of harvesting. Thus one can think of two different types of coffee that include the shade grown or organic coffee and the traditional coffee that is grown in direct sunlight.

Two Types Of Coffee

These two types of coffees are diametrically opposite as far as their production is concerned. There was a time when coffee was only grown in the shade and it was much like the present day organic coffee that we drink today. It is not usual for most kinds of coffee to grow properly under direct sunlight and grow at their best when under shade.

Thus shade grown coffee or organic coffee are used to benefiting from the falling of leaves that are instrumental in mulching the soil and helping in retaining moisture. Also, such type of coffee, when grown beneath trees means that the trees provide a home to birds and thus are a way of controlling pests.

Till about thirty years ago there was not much fertilizer or pesticides used and thus organic coffee was synonymous with healthy production. Then, in the seventies a number of new varieties of coffee began to appear and new methods of producing coffee became known which meant production of more Coffee beans, slower rate of harvesting and also use of direct sunlight to grow the crops.

Thus, the coming of non-organic coffee meant that farmers began to cut down on trees so that they could make plantation rows and in the United States alone it meant almost two million acres of land being dedicated to both organic as well as non-organic coffee growth. Only those farmers that were too poor to use fertilizers as well as pesticides continued producing organic coffee.

There is little doubt that organic coffee does cost a bit more, but the transition from organic to the sun coffee has also meant that the environment is being sacrificed. With erosion of soil and the depletion of nutrients, more chemical fertilizers are being sprayed into the ground and there has also been the removal of rainforest land just so that non-organic coffee can be grown.

This has led to just a few countries remaining that are still producing organic coffee and these countries include Ethiopia, Panama, El Salvador and Mexico. The bigger producers of coffee such as Costa Rica and Brazil are now producing sun coffee.

In the end, organic coffee does mean a better and cleaner environment that does produce a better coffee as far as health and a clean environment are concerned.

Have You Tried Micro Roasted Coffee?

By John Hilaire

Micro roasted coffee is considered by many to be the best tasting type of coffee available on the retail market. The processes used to create this coffee variety are calculated to bring out the best of the coffee beans used in this technique. This type of coffee has a richness of flavor and a quality that cannot be matched by many traditional, store brought brands. Although it is more expensive, it makes up for the price by being high in quality and taste.

What Is Micro Roasted Coffee?

Micro roasted coffee is coffee that is roasted in small batches to exact specifications. The batches of coffee are generally less than 150 pounds, versus the hundred of pound roasted in each batch in commercial factories. The entire roasting process is overseen by skilled professionals with many years of experience in the business. The coffee beans are roasted in a large drum which constantly turns, ensuring an even roast.

Once the coffee is completely roasted, the coffee is cooled by cold air being pulled through the drum by a fan. This process takes longer than the traditional method of cooling the coffee beans with cold water, but it ensures the flavor of the roasted coffee remains the same. Water cooling can also add weight to the roasted coffee, weight that the consumer will pay for in the end.

The factory where micro roasted coffee is prepared is called a micro roastery. The factory doe not rely on a multitude of expensive machines and automation. In fact, the entire roasting process is overseen by one highly skilled individual to ensure that the coffee is roasted to perfection. This infuses the coffee beans with the greatest amount of flavor, better taste, and a higher quality product. This process makes them some of the best tasting coffee in the world.

The individual responsible for preparing the micro roasted coffee is called a roastmaster. The roastmaster is a skilled professional who uses his five senses to detect when the coffee beans are perfectly roasted. This individual is also responsible for creating the coffee blends that so many people in the country enjoy on a regular basis. The roast master has extensive knowledge of which coffee beans are best for micro roasted and how these coffee beans should be roasted to bring out the full flavor of the coffee.

Even though micro roasted coffee can be expensive, it is unsurpassed in the taste it delivers. Many individuals that have tried coffee that micro roasted ,find it very difficult to return to the store brought varieties and can really tell the difference in quality. If you are looking for great cup of flavorful coffee, micro roasted may be the way to go.
