Snacking has become a feature in the routine of most families every day. Due to the fact that finding time for a healthy meal is a difficult task, snacking has become a major feature in most of our diets. It is essential to keep on top of snacking, however, and make sure that what we do consume between regular mealtimes is healthy and good for our bodies. Of course, this is also true when it comes to our children, and ensuring their health and well being can be an even trickier task. Kids bodies need sources of energy to keep them active, and to help them grow and develop into adolescence and adulthood. Additionally, with the increasing problem of obesity in children, it is essential to ensure you child has only the best of healthy snacks throughout the day.
The first consideration to take into account is your child’’s happiness. Achieving a balance between healthy living and a happy child is something many parents adopting the gung-ho ”my way or no way” approach fail to reach. Not only is this antiquated parenting, but it is also a sure-fire way to turn your child off healthy living. Don”t completely ban treats, but keep them to a minimum. Think of everything in balance and moderation as the best way to achieve a healthy diet.
A good place to start is with introducing fruit and vegetables. Experts tell us that we should consume a minimum of five portions daily, and this might at first seem like a high hurdle to meet. However, by introducing vegetables into every meal, and promoting fruit as the alternative choice between times, you can sneak in those added portions, and they really do add up. It’’s also a good idea to maintain an open mind yourself, and to experiment with other fruits and vegetables until you find something appealing to your child’’s taste-buds. After a while, fruit and vegetables will become an engrained part of daily life, and will be something your children crave at every opportunity. Until that point however, it is best to take a sensible approach to your child’’s healthy eating plan.
Healthy eating is a scary phrase for most adults, and for children, it can be even more daunting. It’’s up to you as the parent to enforce healthy eating through making sensible life choices, and it’’s also important to ensure your child understands the need for a healthy balances lifestyle.

Everyone knows that fruit and vegetables are important, as essential building blocks of any diet. Not only are they loaded with vitamins and minerals which are essential for healthy living, but they also help fill you up, as part of a balanced diet. By increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables, you will benefit your health no end, and will boost your immune system, as well as building resistance to common illnesses and infections. Furthermore, fruit and vegetables can leave you looking better and feeling great, as part of a healthy diet, which can be an all round improvement for your well-being.
Experts suggest that we should all consumer five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. This may sound initially like a large proportion of your daily overall intake, although it is essential that you strive to meet this target most days, for the benefit of your physical and mental health. Additionally, by filling out meals and increasing satisfaction at meal times. On top of that, the natural goodness contained within these ultimate healthy foods will provide the necessary energy to fuel you through the day, and give you the drive and determination to progress through a course of exercise to improve overall fitness.
Fruit can act as a substitute for sugary snacks, which otherwise deplete energy and lead to numerous other health problems. The natural sugar contained within fruits is essential for the effective maintenance of the immune system and the body’’s natural defense mechanisms. As well as increasing fruits within the diet as a healthy snacking alternative, it is also a good idea to make more use of vegetables in every meal.
Vegetables should account for a substantial proportion of each meal, to ultimately improve your diet, and by ensuring a substantial increase in the role they play within your diet, you should end up seeing the benefits in your skin, hair, and general health.
By increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy balanced diet, you can really benefit from the healthy nutrients and minerals these foods contain. In addition to this, fruit and vegetable intake can leave you feeling physically better and more alert, increasing attention span and reducing tiredness.
Why not try introducing more vegetables and fruit into your diet today, by doing a straight swap of fruit for sugary snacks, and introducing vegetables to boost any meal, as part of a nutritious and healthy balanced meal.

Sports is what summer means to men. To women it means what am I going to do with the kids all summer and what bathing suit will make me look thin?
A generation or so ago summer meant women covered their dark furniture with light-colored slipcovers. I wouldn”t bother. My furniture gets covered with ice cream drips.
According to some psychologist without enough serious research to do, the popularity of America’’s favorite treat is due to the need of adult Americans to recapture their childhoods. That’’s ridiculous. My childhood never escaped.
My childhood evolved with ice cream. I learned how to count money by buying cones at the corner drug store. I figured out the relationship between pints, quarts and gallons in the freezer section of the grocery store. I was rewarded with sundaes for everything from good grades to behaving on long, car trips.
I grew into adulthood with ice cream. I went with college friends for Ben & Jerry’’s between classes. I wanted Haagen Dazs with my wedding cake. I consoled my sons with Baskin-Robbins when they had chicken pox or scraped their knees.
Ice cream and I have come a long way together and recently we both went natural. I stopped using curlers and hair spray - which saved me money. It stopped using artificial colors and preservatives - which cost me money.
Both ice cream and I have been influenced by fashion. I”ve grown through full skirts, straight skirts, pleated skirts and mini skirts. Unfortunately, scoops don”t have skirts anymore. Skirts were the extra amount that used to be left on the bottom of scoops. Today skirts are rounded off, leaving the scoops nude in public.
Although the majority of summer enthusiasts prefer cones to cups, cups fulfill certain needs. Last weekend I overheard a frustrated father trying to explain to his small son how to lick a cone. The father sounded like a nuclear physicist trying to explain meltdown. Soon it became obvious the child was never going to get in his last licks.
I plan to grow old with ice cream, but the old flavors are getting new names. Chocolate is now “Judge the Fudge”, chocolate chip is “Chip Off the Old Block” and vanilla is “Thriller Vanilla”. Fine. Ice cream by any other name is still ice cream, but it will be a hot day in hell before I want a dish of “Perrier Sorbet”.

No, I didn”t go river rafting or rock climbing or skeet shooting. My sense of accomplishment came from single-handedly getting a sitter.
Yes, I found a responsible, experienced, college sophomore, who didn”t have a date on Saturday night. Unfortunately, her boyfriend comes back from National Guard duty next week; but we had her for Saturday night.
We had her so my husband and I could go out for a romantic dinner for two. Yes, the romantic dinner was my idea. Our children would outgrow the need for a sitter if I waited for John to suggest having dinner at a new, chic, French restaurant.
We arrived at what John referred to as Chez Cost A Lot as equals; but somehow my equality got checked at the door, along with my coat. John was given the coat check. John was also given the undivided attention of the maitre d” when he confirmed the reservation that was in my name.
When the maitre d” asked if we preferred a table inside or on the patio, he asked John. “On the patio”, I replied, whereupon the maitre d” looked at John for his approval.
Then our care was turned over to a waiter, who appeared at our table immediately and who asked John if we would like to start with something from the bar.
Having balanced my check book that day - often a daunting task - and figured out how to get my son to his soccer game when I had an appointment across town, I felt confident I could decide if I wanted a drink. In fact, when I had carried the ladder upstairs to change a light bulb that morning, I hadn”t felt like a member of the weaker sex.
Deciding what to have for dinner, however, was difficult. My menu had no prices. When I asked the waiter for a menu like my husband’’s, he was flustered; but I assured him my marriage vows for richer or poorer included menu prices.
Obviously, my French pronunciation was a bit rusty because the waiter repeated what I ordered in English. I think he was assuring himself I was sure what I”d ordered.
I was and it was very good. Later dessert was sinfully good. Although I had apple tarte tatin, the look on the waiter’’s face was frosting on the cake. After sharing a conspiratorial smile with John, I asked for the check.

Camping is an inexpensive but fun break away from the bustle of everyday life. Living under canvas brings you closer to nature and allows you to escape from the mind numbing technology that intrudes on your daily existence. However, if you are embarking on a camping trip, you need to be prepared for every eventually. When you are living so far from the nearest shop with little household facilities, you should plan well ahead and pack carefully. You also need to know how to take care of yourself when you are out there, so it is vital to know how to cook in order to maintain your intake of nutritious food.
To avoid continuously snacking on potato chips and candy bars you will need be equipped with outdoor cooking apparatus. This can be found easily in your local hardware or outdoor store. A small and simple gas camping stove is ideal for all your cooking needs; these come in various different sizes so packing needn”t be a problem.
If you are camping you will also require a pot to cook the food in. If you are looking to save space in your backpack or case, the simple and most useful cooking accessory you can possess is the basic set of army mess tins. These are inexpensive to buy and usually come in a set of two interlocking, rectangular tins with handles on each. The best way to use them is to cook food in one and then use the second tin to eat your food out of once it has been prepared.
If you are planning to just take a backpack, you will need to try and fit as much food as possible in. Although a tin of beans or soup would be quick and easy to heat up on your stove, tins can be very heavy, they take up a great deal of space and you”ll need some form of tin opener. You”re best to search for meals that come in a flat and light packaging.
Luckily, there are a wide range of soups and even pasta meals in simple foil packages. These can be easily opened and added to water to provide you with warm and tasty food. All you have to monitor is your water supply; you should aim to carry as much water as you can or camp where running water will be available as it is essential for cooking and of course, drinking. Matches are another essential component for lighting your stove. As long as you have enough food, water, cooking materials and a well constructed tent, you”ll be well on your way for enjoying your next camping trip.

The time has come when Christmas is only just around the corner and you still have to go shopping to buy presents, decorations, food, Christmas tree etc. You begin to panic as you have realised that you have to buy a completely new range of dinner sets as your old sets have chipped, washed out or cracked. On the other hand, maybe this is your first Christmas dinner to cook for the family and friends, and you have no dishware to serve your dinner.
This year I have noticed a new trend in simple dinner sets and fine crockery for special occasions. People prefer to purchase simple earthenware designs that match well with plain shades of place mats, napkin with a simple napkin ring and long tinted glasses. Putting a simple spread out for Christmas can be more effective than spending huge amounts of money on expensive dishware and tablecloths that will only be used once or twice in a year.
Dinner sets are something that have been around for more than a century, but have not always been a fashion accessory at the dinner table. Having the right set for a special occasion appears to be an essential part of the preparation process for a big meal such as Christmas. It is not enough now to view dishware as just a tool to eat food from; the design of the plate plays an important part in displaying the appeal of the food and its presentation. It is more common now to serve food on plain white plates than it was during the 1980s whereby flower patterned plates were more popular.
History
Historically dinner sets were made from wood, metals, pewter and even animal skulls. Modern dishware is made from stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, glass and melamine resin. The Chinese had discovered the process of making porcelain around 600AD and had begun trading porcelain objects with the European during the 1300s. Owning porcelain made plates was a must-have for the Europeans. It was not until 1708 that a German potter in Meissen discovered the Chinese porcelain making process, beginning a new range of great European potteries.
Some of the most popular and best-known potters were also founded during this period. Famous brands such as Royal Saxon, Wedgewood, Royal Copenhagen and Spode. The practise of collecting souvenir plates was not popularised until 1800s by Patrick Palmer-Thomas, a Dutch-English nobleman who impressed Victorian audiences with his public displays of plates. The first collectible items ”Behind the Frozen Window”, was credited to the Danish namely Bing and Grondahl.
Christmas designed plates were then produced by many of the European countries particularly that of Royal Copenhagen and the Rosenthal series in 1910. It was not long before the European designs were introduced to the U.S with sales going up in souvenir shops, department stores and gift shops.
Plates are still used as a collectible item, mainly for older generations rather than the younger culture. Some popular collectibles are usually from abroad with intricate paintings of the countries national customs captured onto the dish. With different shapes and thickness available, dishwares are an important element in keeping up a good appearance of one’’s efforts on producing a good spread and the most popular designs are simple with a few small accessories to jazz it up.

An Aga Cooker is an amazing cooker at the best of times, however when Christmas comes around it really comes into it’’s own. Just imagine; it’’s Christmas Eve and you have made your list of Christmas food, possibly prepared vegetables and got all the pans ready for the Christmas day cooking marathon to come.
If you were to use a normal cooker or even a range cooker the chances are that you will have to slave over it for most of Christmas morning, however, if you were to be lucky enough to own an Aga cooker the chances are that most of the hard work will happen in the background whilst you are free to enjoy Christmas morning with the family.
Once you have prepared the turkey all you want to do is get it into the oven and cook it, however to do that and still be able to eat it hot, without the dreaded re-heat, can be a problem. The other struggle you will face when cooking it on Christmas morning is oven space, or should I say, the lack of it. Assuming you will be cooking roast potatoes, sage and onion stuffing and possibly three other vegetables it is likely that unless you have at least two ovens it will be difficult to cook them at the same time.
Working with an Aga cooker is simply a breeze as the four ovens are all continuously at temperature, so there is no waiting for them to heat up, and as they are all at different temperatures you can move food around making sure that it is not overcooked but is always kept warm.
The secret ingredient when cooking Christmas dinner on the Aga cooker is the warming oven, this is where you would normally warm plates or cook food as you would in a slow cooker. If you are looking to reduce the stress of cooking the turkey on Christmas morning use the warming oven, as it operates at a low temperature, you put the turkey into a tray and slip it into the oven before retiring to bed; it will gently cook for around eight hours and then in the morning you will be amazed to see that it is cooked perfectly. You will simply have to brown it a little and it will be ready to serve.
Cooking it this way will also free up space in the roasting oven for the roast potatoes and other vegetables. The trick is planning ahead and you manage your precious time and lessen the stress of cooking the Christmas dinner. The Aga cooker also has the added benefit that no matter how much spillage you have you won”t have to clean it up as the constant heat burns it off.

Whether you realize it or not, cooking is an art. You dont necessarily have to study to be a chef in order to turn out great dishes and to be able to make food that people enjoy. Many home cooks who have a great time cooking realize that their plates lack something, but they arent sure how to bump the quality up a notch. You see, no matter how incredible the food, presentation is everything. Let’’s take a look at the art of garnishing and how to make your dishes look stunning, just like in a high class restaurant.
There are many forms of garnishes. You can use outside elements which are not edible, such as decorative plates, or food itself, like the traditional lemon or orange slice. Another way to garnish is with sauces, which is probably the most art-like method of all as the liquid allows you to draw forms on the plate.
Decorative, inedible elements come in a variety of forms. The plate upon which the food is placed can be a garnish in itself, simply with the patterns that are already etched on it. For many chefs, the plate is the base of all their garnish art. Most prefer a plain plate, of a single color, usually black or white, to form the background for the food and all other decor.
Other inedible garnishes include sauce bowls, hollowed out leg bones that form a container for soups and stuffings, and fluted paper cups that may be used occasionally to present small portions of food separately on one plate.
Edible food garnishes are an art form all on their own. You can go with the simplistic, useful garnish, like a lime slice or an orange wedge on the edge of a plate, or a sprig of parsley atop the rice, but there are plenty of other great ideas that really don”t take that long to do up. For example, you can make some very elegant carrot curls by just using your vegetable peeler to make long thin strips that you then drop into ice water for 5 or 10 minutes. They curl right up and can be arranged around the edge of a plate or used to decorate a salad.
Last, but not least, a squirt bottle filled with gravy or a herb-infused oil (to give it color) can be the cook’’s best friend in the art of garnishing. Just swirl or dot the colored liquid around the plate, before or after the food has been arranged. Elegant zig-zags or simple wavy lines add a whole new dimension to the food as well as lightly seasoning it.
Garnishing is fun, and it adds to the art of cooking great food. Once your family has seen a plate with a drizzle of green chive oil around the edge and a sprig of basil in the center, they will be more than happy to eat what you have made! So go ahead and try adding some art to your dishes tonight.
