There are a lot of little ways to save energy around the house. Most people know the basics, such as turning the thermostat to a lower temperature in winter and wearing a sweater. But it’’s easy to not think of your energy use when you”re cooking.
This can seem like a pretty small thing. After all, cooking is not a large part of most people’’s day. But it is one of those things you can do to make a difference.
We”ll start with putting a lid on the pan when you”re cooking. If you don”t need direct access to the food, having a lid on the pan means it will cook faster. This is particularly evident when you”re boiling water before adding spaghetti. The water boils much sooner with a lid on.
Having the lid on the pan helps to keep your food at the right temperature for cooking, while you can have your stove on at a much lower level since less heat is lost out the top. If you don”t like to spend a ton of time in the kitchen, this also translates to a shorter cooking time.
Another factor to consider is how long you preheat your oven, or if you even really need to. I very rarely preheat mine, as it takes only a short time for it to reach the required temperature anyhow. I make an exception for anything that is more sensitive to temperature, such as when I bake bread. But meats and casseroles don”t need to start out at that perfect temperature.
A tool I”ve been learning to use is my pressure cooker. It takes a bit of practice, but it can cook many foods in under 10 minutes. It’’s one of the few things that I”m considering finding a cookbook for since I have very few pressure cooker recipes.
My slow cooker, on the other hand, is used very regularly. Despite how long it spends cooking, it uses less energy than the oven. It’’s also very easy to have just about the entire dinner in one pot. Throw in a roast and put the potatoes alongside it.
Another favorite way to make quick, just about one dish meals is to stir fry. The chopping takes extra time, but that means the meat cooks very quickly. As a bonus, it’’s one of the few ways I can be sure that my husband will eat his vegetables. The fact that everything only needs a little cook time really helps. If you need a little more intense cooking time, throw a lid on for a little while and decrease the heat so things don”t burn.
And of course, there’’s the microwave. Meats generally don”t cook up too well in them, but for reheating leftovers or giving vegetables a quick steam they”re very efficient.
As you build up your cooking habits to use energy more efficiently, you may come to appreciate how fast many of these methods are. There’’s nothing like doing something that saves you both money and time.

Zinfandel has a somewhat funny history. It’’s always been thought that that the grape comes from southern Italy as well as the Primitivo grape. However is 2001 after many years of research using DNA profiling, it was found that the grape is identical to Crljenak which is a grape from Croatia. It’’s even thought that with some more research the first plants may have originated from either Greece or Albania.
Of course, Zinfandel grapes are very much associated with the West Coast of the USA and ended up there in the mid-19th century at the same time as the Gold Rush. Despite Prohibition in America, Zinfandel continued production by being named sacramental wine.
Zinfandel is a very popular wine and as a result is widely grown, it’’s full of flavour and character plus it’’s also very reasonably priced so you can afford to drink it everyday. However for some reason it’’s not so popular with wine snobs who prefer other wines like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Oh well, their loss is our gain!
Although it’’s a very popular wine today, it was thought that many wine growers were going to get rid of the Zinfandel plants because they had lost popularity. Luckily it regained popularity in the mid-80s and as a result, over the next 10 years, Zinfandel vines doubled.
California seems to be the perfect place for Zinfandel to grow as it enjoys both hot days and cooler nights. The vines also can be grown in a variety of soil conditions and can even produce a second crop. Unfortunately it does tend to ripen unevenly which means the grapes are often either unripe or have started to turn into raisins.
Although Zinfandel is an iconic wine in California, it’’s also recently been grown in Texas by Mr. Poulos of Zin Valle Vineyards in August 2000 when 850 plants were bought and planted. Mr. Poulos wanted to prove that Texas can produce perfectly good wines too and the project has proven such as success that another vineyard was started in 2003.
When the wine has been made, it’’s often allowed to mature in American oak which adds to the flavour. It’’s an exciting grape which can produce many tastes including fresh, zingy, sweet, light and robust. The best quality wines can even be laid down but they do take on a more mellow flavour which may or many not be to your taste.

Attending a French cooking institution is just the ideal thing to do for any up-and-coming cook preparing superlative roux, demi-glace, bouillabaisse, or remoulade.
French cuisine, which denotes “kitchen” in the French language, has drawn chefs from practically every country.
Do you recall Julia Child? She is not with us right now, but just like her strange, drawling accent, her French cuisine was memorable. She studied at the French culinary arts institution, Le Cordon Bleu, meaning blue ribbon, situated in Paris. In the course of time she established her very own French cooking institution in her residence - the renowned L”Ecole des Trois Gourmandes, which means School of the Three Gourmands.
It is unfortunate that Julia Child is not with us to instruct in her profession, but there a number of French cooking institutions to choose from on both sides of the Atlantic. In case, Paris is far too expensive for you, then you can opt for any of the countless French cooking institutions in North America. You can even opt for a school within New York City!
Most of the schools in New York, such as the well-known French Culinary Institute, organize open houses in autumn. Every French cooking institution persuades students keen on joining to examine its set of courses and the specializations offered. Right from soups to sauces, pastries and bread to cakes, to wine enjoyment, a French cooking institution exists inside New York City that caters to every taste.
Are you keen on betting? In that case, Nevada, which has a plethora of casinos, has a French cooking institution in Las Vegas. It is the celebrated Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, set up in 2003. The institution offers combined modules of contemporary American cuisine and traditional French cooking styles.
Students interested in the preparation of gastronomic delights will discover French cooking institutions across Canada. The famous Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, situated on the western coastline, has diploma programs.
Modules offered by French cooking institutions may cover a number of semesters or short weekly sessions. Modeled on the lines of the French cooking institution in Provence, in Italy, it recreates the mood and setting of ancient Italy in a quaint farmhouse, where students soak up the atmosphere for five days, while taking their lessons.
Actually, many travel agencies highlight French cooking institution modules in their tour schedules. For instance, Gutsy Women Travel offers an arrangement that consists of spending an afternoon being trained in French cuisine by cooks in the distinguished area of Quebec City.
However, if you are not restrained by monetary matters when selecting the French cooking institutions, then you can go all the way and pass time in the seventeenth century manor house. Situated in the Burgundy province, to the south of Paris, Cheteau du Fe is the residence of Anne Willan, a writer and a chef par excellence. This French cooking institution embraces everything from savoring wines, vineyard sightseeing trips, and marketing for fresh food products. In addition, students are trained to prepare the classic French recipes such as chocolate souffle roulade.
This then is a French culinary arts institution that students find irresistible.

Sugar cookies are versatile, easy to make and are perhaps the most popular cookie on the planet! The first sugar cookie recipe can be traced back to the mid 18th century and has gone through a number of transformations over the years.
The Ingredients Make The Difference
You would think that one recipe is rather close in ingredients and preparation to another. However, nothing could be farther from the truth and is the reason why many people stick with their “tried and true” cookie recipe that was handed down from grandma. It can be quite mind-boggling sifting through hundreds of recipes for sugar cookies on the internet or even through your cookbooks.
The primary ingredient, sugar, is not cut and dried when it comes to a sugar cookie recipe. You could use the regular granulated white sugar; however there are super fine granulated organic sugar versions that could be incorporated into a recipe and even brown sugar, a southern favorite. The flavoring extract often used in a sugar cookie recipe is vanilla, but you could substitute it for almond extract or even butter extract for a totally new taste.
Even the binding part (the ingredients that make the flour and sugar stick together) of any cookie recipe can be vastly different. Some recipes use lard while other recipes use vegetable shortening, butter or a combination of all of them.
Butter is typically used with most recipes to give the cookie a nice flavor. If the sugar cookie recipe calls for lard in addition to the butter, you can expect the cookie to be crisp and delightfully crumby. However, if the recipe uses vegetable shortening with the butter, you can expect a crisp, yet chewy cookie instead.
Your Recipe Options
Practically everyone has had a sugar cookie in some form or another. Therefore, by deciding the type of sugar cookie you want, you could greatly reduce the number of recipes you may weed through in finding just the right one. For instance, there are sugar cookie recipes for:
* Cut-outs
* Drop cookies
* Refrigerator cookies
* Cookies from a mold or press
A drop sugar cookie recipe is rather quick and easy with you just “dropping” the dough by spoonfuls on a baking sheet. A refrigerator cookie involves you refrigerating the dough, sometimes rolling it into a log shape so that it is easy to cut slices for baking.
Cookie cutouts involve rolling out the dough onto a floured cutting board and using cookie cutters to make shapes. With a press or mold, the dough is conformed into a certain shape.
The bottom line is that each recipe will produce a slightly different cookie. The only thing that should always stay the same is how you bake it. Always use a baking sheet with a sheet of parchment paper covering it as this not only keeps cookies from sticking, but you will rarely have a problem with burning your cookies.
Sugar cookies are truly one of the best. They also come with more recipe options that you might have first imagined. Use the guidelines above to find the sugar cookie recipe that is right for you.

Everyone’’s kitchen should have a good set of kitchen knives. But there are so many different kinds of kitchen knives out there, how do you choose the ones that you need?
There are carving, pastry, cheese and steak knives to name a few. We should start with steak knives because everyone should have a good set of steak knives, whether you eat steak or not. It’’s a good idea to have these kinds of knives because they can cut lots of food besides meats. They can cut breads without smashing it down because these knives are serrated like a saw; apples and other hard covered fruits like pineapples and melons. Vegetables are another good food a steak knife can cut through that a butter knife cannot.
General Kitchen Knives
In the general knife category we have a chef’’s knife, bread knife, paring and utility knives. The chef’’s knife is usually large and can chop just about anything from onions to tomatoes with easy. A bread knife is like a saw, serrated so as not to smash the bread down. A paring knife is a small knife used for pealing things or intricate, delicate work such as de-veining shrimp. And a utility knife is a medium sized knife meant for all types of cutting jobs, however, it’’s too small to handle large cutting jobs, so it’’s best for general purpose usage, some compare it to a butter knife, only sharper.
Carving and Boning Knives
A carving knife, also known as a V-shaped knife is used most often when carving a turkey or ham or some type of meat. They are very sharp knives and the only sharpening needed is back and forth against a metal rod every now and again. Among the meat knives is a boning knife, which as the name suggests, helps when boning a fish and a fillet knife which can also be used with fish, although it can also be used with other meats.
Small Kitchen Knives
Small knives come in handy for, well, small jobs, such as peeling, decorating and trimming. The peeling knife, also known as a bird’’s beak knife because of its tip on the end that points down, are often used the same as paring knives so there is usually no need to have both.
Good Knives for Cooks
Then there are the miscellaneous knives that someone who cooks a lot can use. However, someone who barely knows where their kitchen is can probably live with out these types of knives. They are the cheese knives, one for each, soft and hard cheeses; the Asian knives, Santuko, the Sashimi, Usuba and Deba Hocho knives and finally the specialty knives which would be your tomato, oyster, de-veining, grapefruit, chestnut, mincing and tourner knives.
How a Kitchen Knife is Made
The construction process of the knives is important to know, and just as vital as owning them, and knowing which knives you own. There are at least seven different types of materials knives can be made of; you have the knives made of carbon steel which is carbon and iron. These are very inexpensive and very sharp. Next, you will find the knives that are made out of plain stainless steel. These are the low end stainless steel and are used mostly in flatware such as knives, forks and spoons.
Then you get into the higher end alloys for your better made knives. One good example is the high carbon stainless steel which refers to a higher-grade of stainless steel. Then there are the laminated blades. These use the greatest various materials and sandwich them one on top of the other with the harder surface in the center and the softer ones on the outer.
Some knives are made of titanium, a much lighter weight, further resistant to wear and more bendable than steel. However, it’’s not as firm and won”t hold a sharp edge as long. Ceramic blades are very hard and durable and hold a good, razor-sharp edge for many months and maybe even a year with absolutely no upkeep at all. And finally, plastic knives are not very sharp at all; they are used mainly for cutting vegetables and soft things.
There are several different styles of handles as well, such as wood, which is not as easy to care for as the plastic but are more attractive. The plastic handles don”t absorb microorganisms as much as the wood or composite handles, which are made of two or more types of wood.
Whatever knife set you are choosing, always choose one that has the tang the width of the knife. The tang is the blade going all the way through the handle; this gives the blade balance and will not cause it to crack off if you do some heavy cutting.
Know your kitchen knives and get the best set for you.

When one is invited to have a cup of coffee and enjoy coffee cake they may be surprised to learn that coffee cake does not contain coffee. Coffee cake is so named because it is a delicious treat that goes well with a cup of coffee.
In addition, there are a variety of coffee cakes on the market or that can be made from various recipes. For example there are apple streusel, sour cream or banana walnut coffee cakes, etc.
One traditional coffee cake is a cake made from cinnamon. This coffee cake can be made from a simple recipe. When following this recipe there are basically two steps in the process. Those steps begin with the gathering of the ingredients and following the preparation steps.
Ingredients
Being organized is a key strategy when starting any project. The baking of a coffee cake is no different. Therefore, it is important to assemble the ingredients needed along with the appropriate cooking utensil.
First of all the baker will need a pan to pour the coffee cake mixture into. A bundt type cake pan should suffice.
Then, assemble together the needed ingredients. Those ingredients should include 2 cups of warm water, two packages of bulk yeast or the equivalent of 4 teaspoons, a cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon salt and a cup of cooking oil. In addition, to the mixture, 2 eggs will need to be added, 5 to 6 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar and 6 tablespoons of butter. Also, as an added flavor, the ingredient to make a delicious coffee cake is the addition of cinnamon. 3 teaspoons of cinnamon should be sufficient.
Preparation
Once the ingredients have been gathered together they can be combined to comprise the coffee cake batch. The first step in the process is to dissolve the yeast in warm water. This combination of yeast and water should be allowed to stand for a couple of minutes.
Following this first step, add the sugar, salt and cooking oil. Stir these ingredients together.
Following these steps add in the eggs and beat vigorously to ensure the eggs are properly mixed in. After the eggs have been added, mix in one cup of flour and stir till the mixture is smooth in texture. Following the addition of one cup of flour add in two additional cups and stir in the mixture till the batter is smooth. When this step has been completed add in enough of the remaining flour so that the batter is sticky to the touch.
Once this process has been completed the batter should be placed aside for roughly 20 minutes. During this 20 minutes take the opportunity to lubricate the cake pan and prepare the glaze for the coffee cake. This can be accomplished by mixing the sugar and cinnamon together and melting the butter.
After the 20 minutes has elapsed take the dough and pull out lump portions equivalent to the size of a small egg. Take these small portions of dough and roll them into smooth balls between the palms of your hand. The rolled balls of dough should then be glazed in the melted butter and rolled in the cinnamon and sugar.
After this preparation, place the balls into the pan. Don”t pack the rolled dough too tightly. Add the dough until completely gone and layer the dough if needed. Allow this dough to rise by placing in a warm area for about 45 minutes.
The last step is to bake the dough in an oven for 40 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit

Have you ever been jealous of your friends? Maybe they are more successful, own bigger homes; maybe they entertain nightly, throwing dinner parties and black-tie affairs. Maybe when you are invited, you sit at their dinner tables, drink their wine, and imagine how you would do it better, if only you had the courage. But what, really, is stopping you? Your social shortcomings are probably not that hard to overcome. If you have a desire to entertain, that desire is enough. With adequate planning, thrifty shopping and creative themes and decor, you can throw the perfect, most memorable dinner party, even with less money, space or designer wardrobes than your friends. In fact, the little things matter the most when it comes to social affairs, and the Silhouette Wine Glass especially may be your ticket to neighborhood fame and fortune.
Your social circle, your girlfriends and acquaintances, is an amalgamation of various interests, beliefs and professions. You and your friends are as different as you are similar. This is often the source of a lot of discomfort when men and women sit down to plan a dinner party: they worry about who will like it and who will hate it, who will be happy and who will be bored. They worry about everything that could go wrong and worry themselves right out of the plan. But if you really want to host a gathering, and even if you truly feel you are less important or less successful than your friends, the answer is simple. The Silhouette Wine Glass will bring your friends together on the premise that, regardless of individual differences, everyone enjoys a good glass of wine. And, guaranteed, most of your friends have never experienced a glass of wine like that provided by the Silhouette Wine Glass.
Traditional wine glasses make wine drinking an experience with only one-dimension: taste. While wine makers intend for their creations to be enjoyed with all five senses, this pleasure is cut short when wine glass manufacturers think only of taste. The Silhouette Wine Glass, with its delicately-curved edge, allows for the nose to indulge in the aroma of the wine long before the wine is tasted. Scent fuels taste, and with the Silhouette Wine Glass, wine has never tasted better or felt so soft on the tongue; its bubbles have never popped so musically, and its colors have never looked so rich and creamy.
The elegance of the Silhouette Wine Glass extends far beyond its cost; not only does it restore the art to wine drinking, it restores ambience and atmosphere to glassware. The design and hand-crafted curves of the glasses reflect light in dazzling displays; on your dinner table, these glasses will shimmer like beacons as your guests enter, and at that moment, they will become the worried ones. With this simple purchase, you can achieve that level of fame and fortune you always reserved for someone else; your nightly entertainments will quickly become black-tie affairs.

Herbal teas are a great way to relax and calm yourself. If you have trouble sleeping, drink a cup of herbal tea. Some herbs, such as Chamomile, contain natural sedative properties, so falling asleep after a cup of hot tea is very common.
Herbal teas or tisanes, to give them their proper name, are made by infusing herbs in boiling water.
Herbal teas are made with fresh or dried herbs, flowers, fruit, roots, berries, hips and spices. They can be prepared from one type of herb or plant, or a combination of several, depending on the desired result and flavor. Since herbal infusions do not contain actual leaves from the tea bush, they are totally caffeine free.
For generations, herbal tea have been used in the Eastern world as a preventative measure and as a significant contribution to good health.
Avoid over steeping your herbs as some flavors such as peppermint can intensify and become rather medicinal instead of pleasant. Herbal teas can be enhanced with a little honey or natural sugar such as gur.
With a wide variety of health benefits, such as soothing effects, anti-viral aid, and detoxification, herbal tea has health benefits that go beyond mere hydration.
Apart from relaxing the body, most are high in vitamin C and rich in antioxidants. These antioxidants protect the human body from damage by free radicals, providing some protection against cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Herbal teas nourish our nervous systems and strengthen our immune systems. They ease cold symptoms, calm the nerves and relieve nausea, motion sickness, and dizziness.
It should be noted however that some herbal teas are not safe to drink during pregnancy. Chamomile tea, for instance, has been reported to have adverse effects on the uterus. Therefore avoid chamomile tea during pregnancy. Those that are safe to drink during pregnancy include citrus peel, ginger, lemon balm, orange peel and rose hip. Ginger, it should be noted, is known to ease morning sickness.
Sometimes, an infant with colic can be soothed by the mothers consumtion of chamomile tea. The chamomile enters the mother’’s milk and when the child drinks her milk it soothes his stomach.
Regular consumtion of these herbal tea beverages is proven to generate fresh breathe, rejuvenate skin tone and cool body temperature.
So remember, herbal tea is totally caffeine free, it is 100% natural without any chemical additions and it is a traditional health drink that is invigorating in itself and offers many medical benefits to health. Not only that but it leaves you with a lingering and wonderfully warm feeling of well being. Whether to warm you after a cold winters day or to soothe frazzled nerves, herbal tea is a calming way to go for many.

There are a number of satisfying and nutritious meals you can cook up in no time. You don”t need to be overly skilled in the kitchen, but by using common sense and following these basic guidelines, you can easily create an impressive dish to satisfy any taste.
A great quick and easy meal you can cook tonight is traditional Spaghetti Bolognese. It’’s healthy and delicious, and only requires around fifteen to twenty minutes cooking time if you”re in a hurry. Firstly take minced beef, proportionate to the desired number of eventual diners and brown in a pot. Next add a whole onion (chopped) and cook with the beef until soft. You can also add in all manner of vegetables to your Bolognese, including peppers, mushrooms, carrots - it really is up to you. After you”ve added your vegetables, it’’s a good idea to turn your attention to the spaghetti whilst they are softening in the pan. With one eye on the Bolognese, pour boiling water over some pasta, and bring to the boil, leaving to simmer until cooked. Next, add a can of chopped tomatoes, about quarter of a tube of tomato puree, and a clove or two of garlic to flavour. Mix well, and allow it to simmer until the spaghetti is ready. Finally, serve up on top of the spaghetti, and sprinkle some cheddar cheese to finish.
Alternatively, why not try something more exotic, with this spicy chicken curry idea? Firstly, take some raw chicken breast and cut into strips or cubes. Seal in a pan with oil or butter, and add a whole onion chopped. At this stage, it is also wise to add curry powder and spices to effectively marinade the chicken. This will allow all the flavours to circulate whilst you cook. Next, add around half a can of chopped tomatoes and further mixed spices to taste. Then, boil some rice in a separate pan, and add some coriander to taste, leaving the curry to simmer until the rice has cooked. Serve the curry on top of the rice, and add some bread to finish, for a really great, easy meal. Additionally, you might also like to add some single cream with the chopped tomatoes for that creamy taste.
Overall, by taking simple basic ingredients and using some common sense, you can create tasty meals with very little input. As long as you remember each crucial step, and cook meats well, feel free to experiment, and who knows what you might end up with on your plate next?
