Why Hydration Is Essential For Better Mind Power

By Anna Stenning

The role of the office water cooler has changed over the years, making the transition from keeping thirst at bay for employees in offices to their installation in schools, factories, residential homes etc.

Hydration is important for all people whether working, playing sport, at home, socialising or simply going about a busy day. However, in one section of society, hydration is particularly important. The elderly population are most at risk, both physically and mentally from dehydration. Yet it is only in recent years that its physiological and cognitive effects have been understood.

Much research has been undertaken to understand the connection between health and ageing. It is true that to be healthy and to function correctly, the human body requires a combination of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, proteins and water. The most essential of these being fluid as digestion, body temperature regulation, and the smooth movement of joints and the elimination of waste products all require the body to be properly hydrated.

The average middle-aged person, dehydration by 2% can cause impaired physical and mental abilities. For the elderly however, dehydration takes on a more severe form as their bodies are slower to heal and bodily functions slow down. Stressful situations and temperature fluctuations are responsible for rapid dehydration and this can lead to perceived illness. Speech difficulties and visual impairment are also factors associated with dehydration.

Studies show that many sick, elderly people admitted to hospitals or seemingly suffering from the onset of dementia are found to be severely dehydrated. Dehydration is very common among this group of people. With age, the thirst sensation slows down, the metabolic rate decreases, and various systems become more sluggish and less efficient. Therefore, unrecognized and untreated dehydration in older people, due to the decreasing sensation of thirst, complicates chronic medical problems and increases the likelihood of death.

Fear of incontinence can stop them from drinking fluids as they should but the resulting dehydration can lead to more severe illness in the form of kidney failure. Inadequate hydration in nursing and care homes is a pressing problem and can result in unnecessary illness although this can be addressed by ensuring adequate training of staff and constant availability of fresh drinking water. In the workplace, water is readily available due to common positioning of office water coolers but accessibility of water to the ageing population is fraught with complications.

It is thought that people between the ages of 85 and 99 are most likely to be admitted to hospital with dehydration related illnesses. Reasons for their dehydration could be mobility where they are unable to get their own water, pharmaceutical where the medication has a diuretic effect, physical or mental impairment.

These issues can be assessed and addressed by the caring authority to ensure adequate administration of fluid to those unable to hydrate themselves. Not treating dehydration or not recognizing it can result in unnecessary illness and in some cases, physical decline until death. Treating dehydration can result in rapid recovery.

These days, as more knowledge is gained and the needs of the elderly are considered, more care homes, nursing and residential homes are installing office water coolers, which are no longer exclusively the domain of the workforce.

The Power Of Chocolate

By Shaun Parker

“If any man has drunk a little too deeply from the cup of physical pleasure; if he has spent too much time at his desk that should have been spent asleep; if his fine spirits have become temporarily dulled; if he finds the air too damp, the minutes too slow, and the atmosphere too heavy to withstand; if he is obsessed by a fixed idea which bars him from any freedom of thought: if he is any of these poor creatures, we say, let him be given a good pint of amber-flavoured chocolate….and marvels will be performed.”

Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826)

Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin was a French Lawyer and politician who wrote, Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante; ouvrage theorique, historique et a l”ordre du jour, dedie aux Gastronomes parisiens, par un Professeur, membre de plusieurs societes litteraires et savants or in short The Physiology of Taste. He stated “tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are”.

He had a deep seated fascination with good food and was one of the most prominent commentators and a forerunner of the modern food critic. His opinions were highly regarded by those that read them and as a result his opinions are well respected. He is not the first or the last person to extol the virtue of chocolate but his love of chocolate comes with a certain level of credibility that is unmatched by most food critics. So how should we make the most of chocolate?

Appreciating chocolate

Like coffee and wine, chocolate can be enjoyed as a complete experience. There is an enormous variety of types of chocolate and a connoisseur can learn to distinguish between a wide variety of these chocolates. It is possible to attend chocolate tasting events and chocolate tasting classes where the taster is taught how to appreciate all types of chocolate to their full potential. It is said that being discriminating is one of the most important thing. Finding out which chocolate types that you favour is vital. So you should consider what to look at when tasting chocolate.

5 types of chocolate

According to experts there are 5 main types of chocolate which primarily differ as a result of the ratio of cocoa liquor in the chocolate. Chocolate that contains less than 10% cocoa liquor is referred to as Milk Chocolate (due to the high milk content).

Chocolate with 15 percent cocoa liquor is called sweet chocolate. Unsweetened chocolate and baking chocolate uses pure cocoa liquor that has been turned into a bar. Chocolate with 35 percent cocoa liquor is called semisweet or bittersweet chocolate. Differentiating between these types is the primary job for the chocolate taster next the chocolate taster will look to find a difference between the complex flavours found in chocolate.

Flavours

The flavour of chocolate is made up with a complex structure of different flavours. Good chocolate tasters can find their way through the complex layers of taste and localise the different flavours they encounter. This, as mentioned before, is very similar to the process that wine tasters and coffee tasters use.

Some of the flavours that you can find in chocolate are surprising. Whilst chill and cinnamon can often be tasted many types of chocolate also include floral flavours like jasmine and rose. Interestingly some chocolates include flavours such as mushroom and fresh grass! Finding these subtle flavours is an extremely rewarding aspect of chocolate tasting.

The Magic Of Coffee

By John Hilaire

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the entire world along with water and tea. It is made from roasted coffee seeds or beans. People usually drink it hot but there are some who prefer it cold while others add sweetener, milk, cream or nondairy creamer to their preference.

The Origin Of The Beverage

Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia around the 9th century when shepherds noticed their flock consuming some of the beans in the pasture. The goats appeared to have an increase in their energy level after consuming them. From there, the beverage spread to Egypt, Yemen and finally reached Turkey, Persia and parts of Africa in the 15th century.

Eventually, the beverage reached Europe and in 1690 the Dutch succeeded in smuggling plants into Europe, in spite of the Arab prohibition of taking plants and roasted beans away from their land. The Dutch grew this smuggled crop in Java, which was their colony at that time. It eventually reached the Americas and although, the Americans initially did not take to it, they gradually accepted it and the demand grew from there.

Kinds Of Coffee

Coffee plants come in two main species, Arabica and Robusta. It is said that Arabica is the better tasting brew but Robusta is sometimes used to substitute it, to cut cost. There are other species of the plant and these are coffea libereca and coffea esliaca. Most of the Arabica beans come from 3 major regions, namely, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

The beans or seeds must be roasted before it can be sold. To do this, the fruits or berries must be picked from the tree, dried, sorted out and sometimes even aged. As they are roasted, they turn dark due to the natural occurrence of caramelized sucrose. When coffee is decaffeinated, the caffeine, which was extracted from the beans, are sold to pharmaceutical companies.

The roasted product must undergo grinding before it can be mixed with water and consumed by people. Grinding usually occurs at the factory but some people prefer to grind their whole beans themselves. Instant coffee is either freeze-dried or dried into soluble powder for easy and less time consuming preparation. Other types of coffees are in cans, ready to drink and pre-mixed with sweeteners and sometimes cream is already added.

Coffee Tasting
Coffee tasting or coffee cupping is experiencing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee as connoisseurs. Anybody who wants to do it can do it; they just have to go through the motions of the professionals. The taster sniffs deeply at the aroma of the beverage and slurps it so it spreads towards the back of the tongue. Attempts to measure the taste, more specifically the texture or so called mouthfeel, the acidity and balance or the harmony of flavors of the beverage.

Romanian Recipes That You Can Cook In A Flash

By Peter Finch

Sometimes it happens that we want to eat something tasty, but do not have time to cook some elaborate preparations. We all know that to cook something special means to devote more time and energy, which many of us usually do not have. Ready to eat foods are not a better option either, because these foods contains preservatives and most of the time they have a synthetic flavor or feel in them. In such a situation a Romanian gourmet recipe can fulfill your purpose.

Let us take for example, the recipe of the Romanian Doughnut, which is very easy to prepare. The ingredients are also very much common. You only need 500 g of wheat flour, 120 g of yellow or white butter, 250 ml of milk, 40 g of yeast, 1 tablespoon of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of rum, two yolks of egg, a little bit of lemon peel and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

The process is as follows. First you mix very well the yeast and the sugar until it becomes a paste. Then put in the butter, egg yolk, rum, lemon peel and milk, one at a time, and mix thoroughly. Lastly, mix the flour. Wait for another 20 minutes to let the dough rise. Stretch the dough out using a rolling pin and make it about 2 cm thick. Then cut out the doughnut shapes by a round glass. Wait for another 20 minutes to let them rise further and they are ready for baking.

Potato Broth is again another very easy Romanian recipe, which is extremely easy to make. You need only 600 g of potato, 50 g of parsley, 100 g of onions, 100 g of carrot, 1 liter of borsch, a little bit of salt, with green parsley and lovage one bunch each.

First, you cut the potatoes in square shapes and set it aside. Next, fry the verdure with sliced onions in oil. Then add some water and a little bit of salt and the potatoes. Let it boil for some time. Boil the borsch in another pot and add the mixture with the potatoes when they become tender. Add more salt if required and dress it with verdure to serve.

Another classic example of a Romanian delicacy are meat balls, if you have a penchant for meat dishes. This also requires very little time and effort to make. The ingredients which you will need are, 500 g of minced meat, 50 g of bread, 50 g of onions, 3-4 garlic cloves, 1 egg, some parsley or dill, a little bit of salt and pepper and, of course, some oil for frying.

First you dip the bread in water and press the excess water out. Keep it aside. Fry the onions in about 2 teaspoon of oil.

Then take the minced meat and thoroughly mix the egg, chopped parsley or dill, garlic, pepper and salt with it. Spread some flour or breadcrumbs on a plate and keep it aside. Now, make small ball-like shapes by the meat mixture and roll them over the breadcrumbs or flour. Then pour some oil about half cm deep in a preheated pan at a medium temperature. Fry the meatballs very quickly turning them once or twice. When they are done, take them off the pan and put the new meatballs to fry.

Meat balls can be served both hot and cold. To keep them warm and soft you have to put the balls in a bowl and put some hot water in another pot beneath it and cover the whole thing with a lid. Hot meatballs can be served with salads or vegetables like beans, cabbage, spinach and lettuce. If you like, it can be served cold with tomatoes, radish, green pepper or mustard also. These are three typical Romanian delicacies, which you can make in no time.

Avoid Farmed Salmon For Your Salmon Recipe

By Brue Baker

Whether you are a grizzly bear or a person, salmon is one of the tastiest and healthiest fish to come from the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. You can also find salmon in the Great Lakes of Michigan as well as several other kinds of fresh water lakes all around the world. This global presence means that you can find fresh fish for your salmon recipe almost anywhere in the world.

However, be careful you don”t use farmed salmon. As for farm raised salmon, their fish feed is laced with astaxanthin, the same chemical that turns shrimp pink. These salmon are also fed steroids and growth hormones to make them unnaturally fat for more meat. Most grocery stores or supermarkets will note whether it is wild or farmed.

This pink color is not the normal white color of salmon. Some wild salmon will still be a little pink because they eat a lot of shrimp. Don”t be fooled by the pretty color of the farmed salmon at the grocery store. It is not healthy for you to ingest.

Salmon Recipe Preparations

Salmon is a relatively firm flesh fish which makes it a candidate for a good grilling salmon recipe. There is something about cooking over an open flame that brings out the wholesome flavor of the fish. Of course, there is something to be said for pan searing a salmon fillet to retain the entire fish flavor as well as seal in the juices for moisture.

You might find a salmon recipe or two that requires boiling this fish. Boiling does not retain the flavor as much as baking or broiling and is typically done just to cook the fish so that it can be flaked or shredded for seafood salads or even croquettes.

Because there are a number of varieties of salmon out in the oceans, your salmon recipe will dictate what cut of fish you are planning to cook. Fillets generally will have the skin still intact on one side. This makes for easy smoking, grilling and baking. Steaks are firmer and more substantial against an open flame in the barbecue pit.

A Basic Baked Salmon Recipe

When it comes to baked salmon, choose your favorite cut of wild fish. Prepare a shallow baking pan and line it with foil, then lightly grease with a cooking spray or vegetable shortening. Don”t forget to pre-heat your oven to 425 degrees Farenheit.

Your ingredients will be:
* Olive oil
* Seasonings (choose from a particular cuisine like Mexican or Italian)
* Minced Onion
* Minced Garlic

In a small bowl, pour enough olive oil to adequately coat the fish on both sides. Mix in with the olive oil your favorite spices. Choose basil, oregano, marjoram and minced garlic for an Italian flair of this salmon recipe. For a Mexican flair, add a little freshly chopped cilantro along with a little oregano along with chipolte pepper, comino and minced garlic.

Once all of the spices and the olive oil have been mixed together, you will want to place your salmon in the baking pan. Spread the olive oil mixture on the top of the fish and bake for approximately 30 minutes, depending on the thickness of the filet. Your salmon recipe is done if you can easily flake the fish with a fork.

Healthy Lifestyles From the High Chair Up Creates Amazing Adults

By Derek Dashwood

I had mentioned that my oldest daughter, so sweet and adorable, was a fussy eater, and yet after much play and zooming the airplane spoon past her mouth, with my mouth open, we got a meal down, effort by effort. I treasure the memories to get healthy lifestyles into her as an early habit.

And if like me, you found out that finally some years later, if you kept at through every rebellion and growth spurt and houseful of attitude, there will come a moment. You hear your child lecturing her friends about the junk they put into their bodies.

And you notice she looks more radiant and wholesome and healthy than they do, and you smile deeply and imagine how well based she is. Her healthy lifestyles are now better than yours, forty years later, and she rem And all those airplane trips from plate to mouth around mount Dad pay off. Well done. And they even all love you.

Good examples must be lived, not just lectured from a pulpit. And wonderful to realize that some of what you hear your kids say as if it is their original thought- and to them it is- something that decades earlier they had said yeah, yeah, dad, you do not know, things are different now.

Timeless values are eternal, and the more we get to our most healthy roots, the better. Spinach roots, cabbage roots, carrot roots, beet roots. Back to our roots, the wisdom of the ages, is in every spoon that goes into your Shirley Temple.

Let”s see all our good ship lollipops have plenty of fruits and veggies aboard, and we make whatever silly actions necessary to grow our kids naturally, to whatever they may naturally best become. Enjoy the journey! I am drawn to how the ancient stories can be adapted to now, and I enjoy making appropriate to the moment some age old story.

Rare children”s books tell these stories, all the way back to Dr. Seuss, my modern favorite. But then when wise King Phillip of Macedonia called Aristotle to meet and promise to teach his newborn son Alexander right from wrong, and love from hated, and wise contemplation rather than rash actions, and the deep questions he had recently discussed with legendary Socrates. So, from some time past, wise tutors have been out there, defining right for wrong. And so we should continue, whether we will wear ourselves out early with the massive energy needed to be Great.

Or, like most, with less fever, we can apply ourselves to at least be good and just. As Socrates told Aristotle, and he told Alexander, and, as you may have heard, his horse told me. America has more followed the gentle teaching of those Greek values.

Europe has tended to be like Rome and cane them into being better, more loving persons. Gentle understanding and deep reaches into the soul to understand that a life lived well and in fairness to others more likely ensures a better death and afterlife. No cane allowed, but you must be able. Sigh.

But when our little angels do well, you must remember to give rave attention to appropriate behavior. A great report card may deserve an update to the computer, and let your brainy hero have a budget, and see what she or he discovers. It will not break the bank, but it is a very effective way to have that brain studying away, and you are not giving a bribe- remember that always. You are rewarding great behavior, which makes more great behavior likely.

In contrast, if we gave a murderer a reward, we are mad; although we do that all the time. Best sellers by wrong doers should at least have the money go to the poor and the writer go to jail. Right the wrong. Our kids understand those issues while we over complicate even basic right from wrong.

Let us listen to that innocent loving child within, and by staying in touch with our children and then our grandchildren we can ensure we stay involved in helping the moral center stays in place as issues come and go.

And later you get to fondly recall with fondness all those efforts to eat a healthy lifestyles for all of us to set the good examples. And if you this so consistently, your grown daughters buy organic and fear you may not get it and you have to agree that may be so, compared to them.

What Are Organic Foods?

By Claude Fullinfaw

Organic foods are in reality food that have been grown naturally just as how foods had been grown for centuries gone by.

In the fields the farmers are nor allowed to use any of the insecticides, pesticides, fungicides or for that matter any modern day chemical on their plants. No use of human waste or sewage is allowed.

In the animal kingdom that we derive our foods from, animals are suppose to be reared on pastures free from the above chemicals, antibiotics and any other modern day drugs. The animals have to be reared without the use of growth hormones.

Today the term genetically modified applies to farms that tend to use seeds that have been scientifically tampered with in order that the farmer may yield a higher crop on harvesting.

How are organic foods produced?

The farms have to be free of any chemicals for a a specified number of years. Once the land has been certified clean then the farmer can operate as an organic farm.

The organic crops cannot be treated as modern day farms operate. Rather they have to follow more stringent methods to prevent infestation of rodents, insect, etc. from contaminating their crops or live stock.

How to grow organic foods?

Extreme care has to be taken to prepare the soil and keep it free from air borne insects as well as rats and mice. There are a number of plants that can be grown that will help to keep the insect population down.

The farmer must also spend a fair amount of time actually looking at each plant to see that its free from insect attacks. By rotating the crops around the farmer is able to put nitrogen back into the soil along with other nutrients.

As this is a time consuming job, organic farms are never very large. They normally are just big enough for the farming family to manage. Another disadvantage of organic farming is that as the fruit are normally plucked sun ripened they have to be taken straight to market.

So the farms cannot be too far away from the shops. Organic produce is supposed to be fresh and sold daily.

You will generally find organic foods small in size and brighter in color. The taste will be sharper and much more flavorful. The added benefit is the extra nutrient value you get in your food.

Unfortunately the price does seem to be higher as the farmers have to spend more time cultivating a smaller crop. Hopefully this may change as organic foods get more and more popular.

Organic farmers have to obtain certification from the local government in their areas that their land as well as their methods of farming abide by the rules of the organic association.

In the old days the farms were small and the produce was sold in the local markets. At one time organically grown produce was dominated by genetically modified foods.

In the last 10 years that has changed significantly with organic foods growing in acceptance world wide
