Approximately 7 miles south of Cape Cod on the Massachusetts coast sits an island called Marthas Vineyard. Approximately 100 square miles, the island is the largest island in the New England area. The Vineyard is part of the state of Massachusetts and was originally named for the vast grape growing areas on the island in the 1500s. The island has six primary communities, the most prominent of which is Vineyard Haven.
The Vineyard is one of New England’’s most popular tourist attractions, offering miles of beautiful cycling, running and walking trails. The roads in West Tusbury and Chilmark and the hiking trails found in West Chop Woods are the most widely used and offer scenic views. In the village of Menemsha, the fishing is wonderful. Deep-sea cruises and many different water sports can be found just about anywhere on the island.
The residents of the Vineyard have dedicated a large area of the island to wildlife conservation. Visits to wildlife refuges and sanctuaries are very popular with those visiting the island.
In the warm months of the year, tourists never fail to flock to the gorgeous sandy beaches. In addition to visiting the popular wineries, visitors can go to the Aquinnah Cliffs which offer wonderful views of sunrises and sunsets, the Aquinnah Lighthouse, the Eastchop Lighthouse and the Flying Horses Carousel, which has been in operation since 1876.
Many different forms of accommodations are available on the island of Marthas Vineyard, although, because it is so popular, reservations need to be made many months before visiting the island. Ferries move visitors from the mainland to the island and dock in many areas, although most dock at Oaks Bluff or Vineyard Haven.
The most preferred places to stay are in Vineyard Haven, the islands most commercial town, and Oaks Bluff, known for its night life. Edgartown is a town that has many large houses, built by the sea captains of years ago, that are now used as bed and breakfasts. In the upper island area, hotels can be found in the towns of West Tisbury, Chilmark and Menemsha.
The economy of Marthas Vineyard depends heavily on tourism. The fact that the island is visited regularly by famous celebrities and people who are very wealthy helps to attract visitors. Many of these people own homes on the beaches. Tourism offices offer day trips and excursions to Chappaquiddick Island, which is close by. Maps of the island, information about tourist attractions and general information are all available in Vineyard Haven at the Chamber of Commerce office.

If you aren”t adding a sauce or some kind of flavoring, many would say that you”re simply grilling meat, not having a barbecue. A traditional barbecue is a social event, involving the serving of meat that has been basted with some kind of sauce, and slow cooked for five to six hours at a low temperature (usually about 200F), over either wood or charcoal.
Traditional barbecue meats are cuts of steak or pork, but today, we more often think of hamburgers and hot dogs. In some regions, you might also see bratwurst or other kinds of sausage. You might also find kebabs including roasted vegetables, as well as meat. Texas, Virginia, both of the Carolinas, and Georgia, all claim to be the authentic home of barbecue and those claims may have some validity in each area, as each state has its own barbecue etiquette and traditions, as well as its own methods and sauces to make for a unique barbecue experience.
A Texas barbecue sauce is thick and sweet, with rich tomato flavor. The Texas dry-rub has a mixture of seasonings. Whether the sauce or the rub is used, each is typically applied to large cuts of beef, which are then hung to cook slowly over a well-controlled fire.
To the southeast, the sauce is thinner, and more vinegar is used, while the meat of choice is more likely to be pork. Additionally, the method of cooking typically is to place the meat in a pit or enclosure, which concentrates the heat and smoke, to give the meat a truly different taste.
Regardless of the area of the United States that you”re in, however, the barbecue is an American tradition, and there’’s no chance of it declining in popularity. Almost every family has their BBQ favorites as to sauces and cooking methods. Kind of funny how people take in so closely their family secret recipes. Either way BBQ gatherings are some of the best outdoor activities you can do with friends and family.
At your next barbecue event, you can stir up the conversation and controversy by simply asking your local BBQ connoisseurs seeming simple questions such as what’’s the difference between grilling and barbecuing or what’’s better, wet sauce, or dry rub? Maybe, where did barbecuing originate? The answers may depend on the amount of alcohol the conversation participants have imbibed, but the responses you get are sure to be interesting!

Chafing dishes are a servery unit used to keep cooked food at a servable temperature for either self service or buffet type presentation outlets. Chafing dishes have a very long history going back all the way to old Pompeii where they have been found in the ruins the early chafing dishes would have been made of earthenware and later on of brass or copper and would have used hot coals as a heat source since a roaring fire would have been too hot
Modern Chafing dishes still work in pretty much the same way by placing a heat source underneath a container filled with hot water, onto which a container filled with the food substance will be kept this keeps the food heated to a serving temperature. Chafing dishes are available as traditional flame heated versions (by lighted fuel cells) or electrically powered units. A wide variety of styles shapes and sizes are available on the market from square or oblong, to round and oval shapes
Chafing dishes are a very popular item for food service outlets, there a few guidelines that need to followed for the safe and correct operation of your chafing dish. It is advised that you always keep a minimum of half an inch to three quarters of an inch of water in the bottom pan before lighting the fuel burner. Also to keep your chafing dish in good working order avoid over heating and do not allow your chafing dish to boil dry by keeping the working liquid topped up on a regular basis. The Stainless Steel pan provided with your chafing dish can be used for cooking purposes and can be placed in an oven but should not be placed directly on to a stove top burner or open flame. When cleaning your chafing dish use a mild detergent in lukewarm water and never use a harsh abrasive cleaning product or scourer.
Chafing Dishes are an excellent product for dinner parties as the food can be prepared in advance and left to be served as a when guest get hungry freeing up the hosts time to enjoy the party and spend time with the guest instead of keeping an eye on the food. Food substances inside your chafing dish will require occasional stirring to evenly distribute the heat but you will rarely encounter any food becoming burnt in a chafing dish unless the bottom pan is allowed to boil dry. It is recommended that before the first use of your new chafing dish that you clean the inside with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly to avoid the chance of any manufacturing chemicals or packing materials contaminating the taste of your food. Lids should always be replaced back onto the chafing dish at the soonest opportunity to add heat retention and also to keep any moisture locked in.
Chafing dishes in use today are normally used only for keeping food at a serving temperature but not so long ago chafing dishes were actually used to cook certain types of dishes and chafing cooking recipe books were commonly available

Because there are not too many fast food restaurants that offer that many healthy choices on their menus, it seems like we are always stuck eating somewhere fast and unhealthy because we have not planned well enough and ran out of time. So since it is almost inevitable, how do we make the most out of a fast food meal without putting on the pounds?
The great thing is that many fast food restaurant chains are now required to post calorie information on their menu boards. This now makes it much easier for you to make a better decision of what you can and should order when on the run. Something to think about when ordering food is to be aware of the number of calories that are in salad dressings, cheese and sour cream. Although you may be thinking you are eating healthy while ordering a salad, you actually may not be because of the calories from those small additions. When you order a grilled chicken sandwich, order it without the mayonnaise. Restaurants have become much more conscious of menu alternatives like salads with low calorie or fat free dressings.
If you don not see these items, ask. They are often times available, just not displayed with the unhealthier choices.
A few general guidelines that may be helpful when eating on the go are:
1. Stick to the lighter menu options. Restaurants are offering more healthy choices on their menus. You must find the ones that you should be ordering to maintain a nutritional lifestyle. Healthy fast food eating is dependent on you understanding what is in the fast food items and making the right choice.
2. Understand the portion sizes. Most value sized combo meals are well over 1,000 calories. This is way too many calories for your body to burn through without leaving some to be absorbed as FAT. If they don not offer smaller portion sizes, ask for a takeout bag and eat it another day for another meal. I do this most every time that I eat out, even at the healthier restaurants. It is very important to control how much goes into your body every meal. Just because food may be healthy does not mean you can still eat twice as much as your body needs, you will not be able to absorb it all or burn through it, and
that means it has to go somewhere, your fat cells.
3. Order Food To Go. Research has shown that humans are more likely to eat more when they are eating out. So what does that mean? Avoid the situation to where you are likely to overindulge.
Even though it seems impossible, eating fast food in a healthy way is possible. You just need to pay more attention to the healthier options that these restaurants now provide you on their menus. This may be extremely difficult in the beginning because of the habits you have formed, but the payoff to your health is worth it.

If you trying to lose weight beware of certain “fat-free” or “low-fat” products. Even though they are low in fat it doesn”t necessarily mean that they are low in calories. And, if they contain flour, they can cause you to gain weight.
White flour comes from grain which has been stripped of all its natural fiber and ingredients; it has little nutritional value and will cause you to gain weight.
Here’’s some really good news. If you do nothing more than stop eating all products made with flour you will lose weight.
White flour is a bad carbohydrate.
Now, here’’s why. White processed flour is similar to white sugar. It comes from grain which has been chemically treated during the growing process, stripped of all its natural fiber and nutrients, and chemically bleached to make it a pretty white. Not to mention pretty unhealthy.
It’’s a food that the body does not know how to digest. It has little nutritional value, spikes your insulin and can cause constipation. Yet the American Dietetic Association recommends we eat 8-11 servings of them in our daily diets. And that’’s not good advice.
The public has been programmed to believe that white flour products are healthy and should be part of your daily diet.
This is because they are low in fat, cholesterol and calories. People eat things like white bread, cereals, pasta, bagels, crackers and pretzels and believe they are eating healthy because some these foods are labeled “low-fat” or “fat-free”.
But what food manufacturers have failed to mention in their clever advertising is that these products have zero nutritional value and can lead to poor health. And most of them are chock full of bad carbohydrate calories which turn into fat.
This may surprise you; wheat bread is not any healthier for you than white bread.
They both have a high glycemic index rating of around 100 which is unhealthy. Even though wheat bread has been minimally processed and contains more fiber it is still full of the wrong carbohydrates that will turn to fat and cause you to gain weight.
If you are trying to lose weight stay away from whole wheat bread, whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat pancake mix, shredded wheat, wheat crackers, raisin bran, and the thousands of other wheat-containing products that promise health.
As many as 75 percent of overweight and obese people in the U.S. may be addicted - through poor eating habits - to either bad carbohydrates or the protein called gluten, which is a problematic protein present found in all wheat, whole wheat, wheat bran, rye, and barley products. Soy flour and corn bran do not contain gluten.
Stick to healthy foods if you want to lose weight
Stay away from flour products if you want to lose weight. Learn to substitute other healthy foods for flour products and you will see faster results for your weight loss program.
You may have difficulty eliminating all flour products from your diet overnight. If this is the case then start by staying away from snack foods made with flour.
Satisfy your cravings for unhealthy snacks and get your daily fiber by eating good and healthy carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables.
Eliminating flour products from your diet is one the quickest ways to lose weight. However, it’’s not easy to stop eating breads and snack foods. You can start by substituting other healthier snacks and be on your way to losing excess weight and improving your overall health.

Potatoes, undoubtedly win the crown for the world’’s most preferred vegetable. Whichever cuisine or whatever part of the world you are in, potatoes is one sure thing that you would find to eat. There are many people whom I have met who find it very difficult to adjust to the cuisine of a particular place while travelling. The potato then is the most preferred and the first choice that provides you the scope of satiating your hunger pangs.
The preparation may differ from one cuisine to the other, however, the versatility of this superb vegetable does not cease to surprise you. From the mashed potatoes, the popular french fries to being an important ingredient of stews to the indispensable “Aloo” (potato) of the Indian cuisine, potatoes definitely are an omnipresent vegetable. The potato sure has many floored with its charm all across the globe.
There is however, a general perception or rather a misconception among some that potatoes are not good for health and must be avoided on a regular basis. However, this is definitely not true. Potatoes are the best known source of carbohydrates in the world. It is not the potato that is injurious to health it is the techinique of cooking it that makes it good or bad. Deep fried potato dishes are a definite no…no. Now that does not apply to potatoes alone. Deep fried dishes made with any vegetable or meat is not good for health if consumed on a regular basis. It is the cooking style of deep frying that makes it unhealthy and the potato is surely not to be blamed.
So it’’s back to our very own favorite the potato. You can now eat the potato without any worries provided you pay a little attention to the way you cook it. And as I always highlight everything in moderation is fine…just see that you do not go overboard.
Potato chips are definitely the world’’s preferred and the most popular snack. You just can”t stop at one, that is for sure. However, it is only when you have finished off half the packet or maybe the whole thing that the evil guilt strikes. Loads of oil and salt…how can you resist the great taste. The most popular brand of potato chips - “Lay’’s” now introduces a low salt version “a pinch of salt” to let you handle your guilt and health better and munch away.
The news of the Lay’’s company introducing potato chips with low sodium must definitely come as welcome news to all chip lovers. The “Pinch of Salt” the new entry on Lay’’s line of snacks has 75 milligrams of sodium per ounce of serving as compared to 180 milligrams in the regular pack. That definitely is good news for those who just can”t stop munching. The low sodium variety for one thing does not compromise on taste, so you do not have to give up on taste for those health benefits. Warning : Munching uncontrallably on high calorie snacks is injurious to health. Anything and everything in moderation is advisable (being a health freak I just couldn”t resist adding the warning note).
The potato definitely is the universal ambassador propagating the strongly the idea that “if you are good, you can take on the world”. Guess that is one way to look at the potato:).

Everyone loves fast food these days. In fact, it has already become a part of our life. A lot of people have adapted this kind of lifestyle. To some people, they will have fast food for all the three meals.
In the past, fast food is considered something expensive and not many people will be able to eat them. However, the situation has been changed these days. Fast food is considered something inexpensive and this is also one of the reasons to have more fast food. As a matter of fact, we are very busy nowadays and we tend to have our meals very fast. This is another reason for the popularity of fast food. It seems that fast food is a good solution for our meals nowadays. We do not have the time to have some really good food. However, we have to do it otherwise we will not be able to keep ourselves healthy.
At this point you may thing that you will not be able to have healthy fast food. Yet this is not totally true. There are ways to make fast food healthier. When you try to order a burger, you should not get the chess and mayo. This will cut the fat content of the burger and make the burger a lot healthier.
Considering the cheese, you may think that it should be something healthy since it is made from milk. However, the fact is that some cheese is made from cooking oil. From this you may probably be able to understand that some cheese is rich in fat content. You may wonder how you can distinguish these two kinds of cheese. In fact, it is not difficult to do so. You can distinguish them from their outlook. In most cases, the unhealthy cheese is orange in color. They will look oily. You should avoid this kind of cheese. You should never have bacon for your fast food. This will greatly increase your calorie intake and of course it will make the fast food unhealthy.
Another thing is that you should avoid foods which are deep fried. Deep fried chickens taste good. However, they are loaded with fat and it is not good for your health. Staying avoid from deep fried fast food will make you a lot healthier. As a result, if you would like to have a chicken sandwich, you should make sure that the chicken is not deep fried.

If you are one of the thousands of people who don”t know a lot about wine, then this article is for you. Here, you will learn a little something about food wine and what wines should be pared with what foods. It is impossible to learn everything at once, but this will steer you in the right direction. You no longer have to belong to the uninformed masses.
The old rule that white is best with white meats and that red is best with red meats still stands today. Although things are a little more complicated now, it is still a good beginning rule. Another rule to follow in most cases for food wine is that each taste should be counteractive.
What this means is that each taste of food or wine should completely mask the taste of the other. Food wines are supposed to enhance the food’’s taste by acting as a palate cleanser, making each bite of food taste as good as the first. And of course, it is vice versa for the wine flavor.
If you can taste the flavor of the wine or food over the other item, then you probably are working with a bad match. It is harder to match food and wine now because so many different flavors of food get worked into a single dish. The best rule for these cases is that the body of it should match the food. Heavier foods get heavier wines and vice versa.
The main determination for food wine combinations is the balance of sweetness, acidity and bitterness of both the food and wine. It is pretty easy to figure out what should go with what foods by considering the wine and food characteristics.
If a sweet food is being served, pair it with a sweeter wine. For bitter foods, a more bitter wine is in order. The best way to determine the acidity of a food is to determine if it would go better with more acid added.
For example, adding lemon to a fish means that a more acidic wine should be consumed. Some common white wines that are acidic are: Rieslings, most sparkling wines and white Bordeauxs. Acidic red wines include: Gamays, Pinot Noirs and Sangioveses. Sweet white wines include: White Zinfandels, other forms of Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. Sweet red wines can include: Port and Lambrusco. There are not many bitter white wines, but there are some bitter red wines. These can include, red Zinfandels, Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons.
Now you know the basics about food wine and how to pair wines with different foods. There is still a lot more information out there, so if you want to learn more, then you should pursue those options. Joining a wine club is a good option, as well as just doing independent research. This will help you to become quite knowledgeable about wines.

Every newspaper or magazine you pick up is full of advice on diet and diet related health articles. It has been the same for many, many years. Different ideas come along and if we believed and followed everything we read then we would probably be following a vastly limited diet. Some of the advice has been pretty controversial and some of them just downright dangerous.
There has been everything from the cabbage soup diet (only for those with no friends) to the grapefruit diet (for those with no taste buds or appetite). As if people weren”t confused enough over all the different types of diets and healthy eating advice there is out there, we also have no idea what the ideal weight is.
Doctors and insurance companies have set guidelines over what they consider to be a healthy weight range but even this has differed over the years and on top of that, many young people feel pressured into looking a certain way - you usually amounts to them being underweight. Add to this the other end of the spectrum where you see vast amounts of obese people in this world and it seems the diet balance is all out of kilter.
The Atkins Diet was one that was followed by many celebrities and at the time hailed by most as a breakthrough into everybody’’s dream of healthy, easy weight loss without having to leave out too many of our favourite foods. However, like all of the fad diets it has had its critics. The Atkins diet cuts back on carbohydrates but some said that as we need carbs then this would not be good for us. Although, as with all diets, initial weigh loss is successful, it would go back on again as soon as the diet was discontinued.
Low calorie and low fat diets have been followed by many but the busier our lives have become, the harder these are to stick to. Convenience snacks and fast food mean that we lose track of our calorie and fat intake. But these are exactly the foods that are crammed with far too much sugar, salt and fat to possibly be healthy for us yet these extras are needed to provide some sort of taste to the product.
In the news this week is the revelation that, actually, the Atkins diet is as safe to use as any other calorie controlled diet. However, at the end of the day, the government have been trying to get across the message that when it comes to our health and our diets, moderation is the key. Whether it be in what we eat or how we exercise, there is no need to be beating ourselves up over it, we just need a measure of control and a little enthusiasm to live that little bit longer, that little bit healthier.
A balanced diet has room for the occasional sugary treat or the occasional bag of crisps, even for the once a week takeaway. However, the key is not to live like this every day. A balanced diet should consist of a health portion of fruit, vegetables, dairy and some meat or fish and some carbohydrates for energy. This type of diet will bring us all we need to feel fit and strong and it will, at the same time, afford us our best opportunity to fight off illnesses and diseases.
If we combine our balanced diet with a regime that gets us moving at least once a day, whether we choose to visit the gym or simply walk the dog, any activity that removes our rears from the sofa, will have a beneficial effect. So, we can read all the advice we like but the best ideas are the simplest, cheapest, healthiest and will have the most lasting effects.

Early Australian wine production dates back to the 1791, when grapes were imported from Europe and wine was shipped back to the United Kingdom. Slowly but surely, Australian vineyards in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia sprouted up.
The industry was furthered by the Land Selection Act, which freed up land that had been locked for gold rush mine development and the removal of trade barriers when the federation was established in 1901. The industry experienced ups and downs during the world wars, due to space constraints, overproduction and changing British government rules, but by the 1950s, the industry was thriving, with South Australia leading the way. Australians have grown to love and appreciate wine even more over the years as their wineries gain international recognition.
You will likely never forget the first time you try an Australian Riesling: as the white wine explodes with hints of apricot, peat and a particularly sweet-and-sour green grape flavor. Compared to German Rieslings, the Aussie variety is drier, with less sweetness and more aroma. Chardonnay is a relatively new variety in Australia, but you can find smooth or crisp varieties, depending on which vineyard you buy from. The Australians sometimes pair Chardonnay with Semillon white wine.
Semillon itself is a drier white that goes well with fish. Unlike Semillon, which is produced in humid regions of Australia, the Pinot Grigios come from the cooler climate regions and are a crisper, more tart wine, as opposed to aromatic and subtle.
Red wines, like Shiraz, are very popular and include ripe fruit, tannins and spices that complement beef, lamb and pork entrees. Pinot Noirs are smooth reds with a long finish that is delicious with ham, duck and cheese. Drier in nature, Cabernet Sauvignon has a bold taste and deep flavor, and is often popular as a “Bordeaux Blend,” mixed with Merlot.
With so many different Australian climates, the wine-producing regions run far and wide. Just North of Adelaide, which is in the southeast region of Australia, you”ll find Barossa Valley, an area known for its hot and dry climate and for producing Shiraz and Cabernets. North of the Barossa Valley, you”ll find the hotter and drier wines of the Clare Valley, which produces the strongly flavored Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet.
The most southerly vineyard in the South Australian appellation is Coonawarra, which produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, with its limestone subsoils and low heat. In eastern Australia, near Sydney, the Hunter Valley is known for tasty Shiraz, but also its Rosemount Reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
South of Adelaide, the McLaren Vale produces full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet. In case you haven”t figured it out, Adelaide is a good starting point if you want to add an Australian wine experience to your next vacation!
One of the best times to experience Australian wine is to come during one of the Australian festivals. Every month, the Victorian Wine Regions feature a Showcase Series at Fed Square in Melbourne, which features wine from a particular region. You can chat with winemakers and experts from the selected region and try different wineries all in one convenient location.
If you come during January, then there’’s a Tasmanian Fruit Wine Festival. Melbourne’’s Food and Wine Festival is in March and the Barossa Vintage Festival in April can”t be beat! Brisbane has a nice Fine Wine Festival in July and the Hunter Valley has a “Jazz in the Vines” series in October. Lastly, the Margaret River Wine Region has a festival in November.
