In ancient civilizations all throughout the Americas, the healers often used chocolate as a remedy and to address various health issues. But is has only been in the last few years that anyone in the Western world acknowledged that chocolates could provide any kind of health benefit. The fact is that even though people consider treats made from cacao delightful to savor, they have also been associated with cavities, acne and other ailments.

But opinions are changing. In recent years there has been a great deal of scientific research that now points to numerous health benefits that people might enjoy from imbibing in chocolates candy and delicacies that previously were thought to be nothing but trouble, except to the taste buds. Chocoholics around the globe are now delighting in these reports, which state that good quality dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate, when eaten in moderation, are not considered detrimental to health but can actually be quite beneficial.

The most common myth that has to do with the consequences of eating chocolate is about acne. Many people believe that the eating of chocolates and acne flare-ups are related. However, in two large research studies that probed the matter, the findings were that the consumption of cacao products was not related to people experiencing an outbreak of acne.

These research studies were conducted by two very reputable and well-respected organizations; the University of Pennsylvania and the United States Naval Academy. In addition to these specific research studies on the correlation between the consumption of chocolates sweets and the incidence of acne, there have also been numerous studies that have shown, in general, no definitive relationship between a person’’s diet and acne.

The other major myth about eating chocolates sweets is that it contributes to tooth decay. However, this myth has also been debunked and the Eastman Dental Center. The center conducted research which showed that the commonly known cacao concoctions actually contain some very beneficial phosphates, as well as other minerals. These elements serve to minimize the effects of the sugar that is an ingredient.

As a result of these findings, the researchers concluded that chocolates are the least likely treats or desserts, such as chocolate cake, to end up causing tooth decay and fostering cavities. In a separate study conducted at the Osaka University in Japan, researchers discovered that there are also several antibacterial properties in the cacao that were very effective at counteracting tooth decay. Of course, proper dental hygiene and brushing regularly is a must.

It seems that dark chocolate is an especially rich source of beneficial antioxidants, which can help to counteract the effects of free radicals in the body. On top of that, cacao also has numerous phytochemicals and flavanoids, both of which have a range of healthful benefits. Overall, these reports should help to make people feel even better about buying gifts of chocolate, such as truffles, for the favorite people on their Christmas list.

The American Beer Can Hold Their Own In The Brewing World

If you are a beer drinker, then you undoubtedly have a certain brand that you prefer. And as you probably know, there is a lot of debate among fellow drinkers about the right brewing system. People from all over the world have their own particular favorites.

It might be that they believe German beer is far superior to American beer. The truth is that unless you taste them all, you will not really be able to argue which one is the best. American varieties can definitely hold their own in the beer brewing world.

Certain types of American beer are brewed in the same way that many other breweries in foreign countries brew their beverages. There seems to be an overwhelming thought that all American beers are the same. Sure, you can find them in local convenient stores but there are many micro-breweries that brew lagers, pilsners or stouts. You can find great prices and still be buying something brewed in the United States.

Let’’s take for example Bud Light. For some it is an iconic drink that is the “King of Beers,” yet for others they do not like the taste and simply prefer a more complex beer that contains additional notes of flavor. The bottom line is that the brewing system used for Bud Light is the same brewing system used for imported beers.

It comes down to a matter of taste and what flavors you prefer. Do you like your beer to contain more hops? Do you prefer barley over rice? Different brews follows the same directions but vary on the ingredients and it is this factor that challenges a person’’s taste buds.

Before you make up your mind and are determined to stay with one nation’’s brew, give some other beers a chance. Sure, they may not be a domestic product but that does not make them the automatic best where you are concerned. Beer should be enjoyed not debated over. It is one of the most popular drinks in the entire world and has a rich history dating back to the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians.

The point in choosing an American beer or one brewed in a different country is taste. In order for you to make an informed decision on whether or not to try a Canadian beer or one from any other country is that you have tried enough different varieties from various brewing manufacturers to know what you like in a cold beer.

Only when you have other tastes to compare it to will you know exactly what you like. Who knows? You may find out that you are a pilsner fan when all along you thought you only liked lagers.

The first thing you should know about ales is that the brewing system is different than the one used for lagers, stouts or meads. Ale is brewed using a top fermenting brewer’’s yeast and it has a sweet, fruity taste that is full bodied.

Hops are then added to the ale mixture to give it a bit of bitterness to counterbalance the sweetness. You wind up with a perfectly balanced ale that still retains its sweetness, yet has an edge to it.

If you are interested in the history of the ale, then you should know that ale was a very standard drink during the 15th century. It was as common to drink as water. With today’’s market, anyone can find great ales. You no longer have to worry about making your own. You can simply go to the local liquor store and pick up as many types of ale as you wish. Of course, you probably do not drink ale with every meal but it is still a fabulous beverage to enjoy when you are relaxing with friends and family.

How Was Your Holiday Meal?

For most of us the holidays represents a special time of year. Sure things can get stressful at the mall, the grocery store and maybe there are some relatives you don”t feel like being around. Whatever gets you down for most of us the idea of spending time with family and the special feeling that is in the air is what makes us happy and gets us by.

I for one only concern myself with the good times with family, the bounty of food and the great drink. If you don”t have all three of these then there is no point in celebrating this holiday season. I know there are some of you out there that had to go to your in laws or maybe an Aunt’’s house that doesn”t make a good turkey dinner, I feel your pain.

Turkey dinner is all about three things, moist Turkey, flavorful gravy and stuffing. Anyone can make mashed potatoes, veggies and whatever else you had is really quite irrelevant if the top three aren”t handled with care and precision.

I am compared to most cooks what I would call above average, I love to cook it is one of the things that really relaxes me and allows my limited creative juices to flow. I have done some training and a heck of a lot of reading and understand the proper way to cook just about anything. That being said I leave Turkey dinner to the women in my life because quite frankly I could not and would not do a better job.

I am lucky that on both sides of my family there are women that can cook a mean Turkey dinner. In both cases the bird, gravy and stuffing is different but equally pleasing. My wife who normally doesn”t do the Turkey dinner for these big family occasions is very good at doing it for our family. When the time comes and it’’s her turn to cook the bird we will have no issues. It will also come with great pride when my wife will be able to teach our daughter how to do the same, this really is a rite of passage in our family.

Here is something interesting I had the gals try this year. White meat and dark meat cook differently, bottom line is the white meat takes less time than the dark stuff. Instead of cooking the turkey whole I separated the breasts from the turkey. We cooked the breasts separately from the rest of the bird. We cooked the breasts 2 hours less than the rest of the turkey at the same temperature. At the end of the day had amazingly flavorful and moist breasts. The rest of the turkey was still intact to hold all of the delicious stuffing.

While you may not want to stick your nose in a glass of wine and then gross out your friends by slurping it up and rolling it around in your mouth, it may be something to consider on those nights alone when you can fully enjoy the smell and art of tasting wine. Can I Roast My Coffee Beans At Home?

Lets face it, a big part of the enjoyment of coffee is its smell. Coffee drinkers can hardly imagine life without the aroma emanating from that freshly brewed pot first thing in the morning.

For some extremists, the next question is whether they can take that concept and actually roast their beans at home, rather than buying the roasted beans at the store and only brewing them.

There are many considerations in this question, but with some research, one can find evidence that home-roasting has taken place for centuries already. What, then, are the considerations when thinking about roasting coffee beans at home?

Well, first of all, roasting creates byproducts, not just aroma. There is some particulate matter produced, as well as some gases. Therefore a firm understanding of the process is mandatory before one embarks on this journey of love and anticipation.

One must also understand the goals of home-roasting. What are you trying to achieve? The reasons for home-roasting are many, but the process can be ticklish, and some work will be required on your part before you heat up the stove.

At light roasting, the beans are roasted until the beans “pop” or “crack.” This is called first crack. Most mass market coffee roasters stop at this point. Beyond that, the beans go from dry to shiny, to very oily. At French roast, the beans begin to smoke and the sugars begin to carbonize, and the taste is that sharp, bitter taste and the inherent flavors of the bean are lost.

So, yes, you can roast your coffee beans at home. With some care and attention.

Try sipping a bit of wine and roll it over your tongue. Place the wine at the center of your tongue and gargle it to release its flavor. If the tip of your tongue is tingling, it indicates a sweet wine. Acid wines will give you needles and pin-like sensations at the sides of your tongue. If you feel dryness all throughout your mouth, indicates a wine with high tannin. Tannin is considered as natural preservatives and you often find them in younger red wines.

Before swallowing the wine, try to observe if there is concentration of deep fruit in the wine. In tasting wines, it is advised that you swallow the wine little by little. The best of wines should display a pleasant and lingering finish.

Not everyone can assess the wines quality even if they follow the so-called rituals because it takes time and experience to identify the best wines in the world. The first is the first impression or what the wine tastes like when it enters your mouth, the second is the taste or the flavor of the wine when you are actually swirling the wine around your mouth and the third is the aftertaste, which is the lingering flavor after swallowing the wine.

Build A Great Family Dinner With This Thanksgiving Recipes

Check the meat with a meat thermometer and the oil temperature with an oil thermometer. Hot oil may spatter so do this in an open outdoor space. Heat the oil to among 325 degrees and 350 degrees F. Cook it for three minutes per pound, until the breast is 170F. Frying a turkey doesn”t involve cooking the stuffing inside the bird, but it does include spices directly injected into it.
