Things like coffee and soda can cause insomnia, nervousness, and irritation in the stomach. Scientist have noticed through studies that tea an immediate boost without a crash later. Tea is great and can relieve fatigue and help clear the mind and event he digestive system.

Another type of tea is called Black Tea. This tea contains flavonoids that are natural vitamin-like compounds. These vitamin-like compounds can prevent clotting of blood. In studies of men who drank about four cups of tea a day had a sixty-nine percent reduced risk of having a stroke compared to those who only drank about two cups of tea a day. Flavonoids in tea are also thought to prevent tooth decay. This is because tea contains fluoride and the flavonoids in the tea fight against bacteria that eventually cause people to loose their teeth. It also fights against and kills the biggest cavity-causing bacteria.

So if you are ready to try something different and become healthy try something outside your comfort zone and drink something tea. The one thing to remember though is not to pile in a bunch of sugar because then you are just reducing the benefits of the tea. If you do not like the flavor of regular tea there are many more flavors out there to try, so find the one you like the most and stick with it.

Importance of Buying Organic and Fair Trade Tea and Coffee

There exists around the English and their tea drinking, myths. Admittedly people in the UK drink lots and lots of tea, and some, not from the UK, even think it”s a ritual, imagine that! Unfortunately, lots of people from the UK are not aware that the tea they drink is grown in parts of the world by producers who care not for their workers or the environment. Some tea plantations in the developing world, who pay their workers a pittance, use poisons and pesticides that are sprayed directly on the crops and even on the poorly paid workers who tend them.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. Organic and Fairtrade tea, coffee and coca are being offered and they are growing in popularity. The more people learn about the abusive practices of some of the plantation owners the more they are searching for those alternatives, and are willing to pay a few extra pennies for enormous benefits to the health of all and the conditions of workers. Sustainable is a buzz word now and for that reason people are reaching out to Organic and Fairtrade markets.

Organic and Fairtrade are different, though some offer both. Fairtrade promises that their workers are cared for in a manner that offers them improved working conditions and fairer pay which enhances their quality of life. Fairtrade tea, coffee and cocoa are truly altruistic endeavors because the benefit is only to the worker and not the person who purchases the product at a higher price.

Organic tea, coffee and cocoa, on the other hand, benefits the purchaser, the worker, the environment and the health of the planet in general. Who doesn”t want organic? Especially when it is not that much more expensive than the standard brew. A good choice of organic, fair trade tea is Morrisons own branded organic, fair trade tea bags, since it is cheaper than the branded products like clipper teas.

Based on what is involved in becoming an organic grower, it is really surprising that it costs so little more than the standard brew of tea or coffee.

A self sustaining, environment friendly tea or coffee plantation is required to qualify as organic, and must use natural insect and disease management. This only happens when there is, inherent in the land itself, an equilibrium in nature that encourages healthy plants, and control of harmful insects without the use pesticides.

The establishment of these organic tea fields and coffee plantations is complex and requires quite some time. Soils are not virgin and require that the chemical residues from past cultivations be neutralized and nutrient levels need to be built up. This interim period, also called the conversion period, could take from 3-5 years, depending on the agro-ecological condition of the farm. The timing of the conversion is important because if the field or plantation is brought back into production before its time there could still be chemical residue in the soils. If the timing is correct and the techniques are followed there is little chance any pesticides will contaminate the end product.

There is a large selection of organic herbal teas available also. Being organic is a great benefit for herbal teas as some are used for medicinal purposes. Just to name a couple, peppermint tea aids digestion and chamomile tea offers to soothe and relax.

Your Guide To Canning And Preserving

When the economy faces a downturn such as the one we”re currently experiencing, we often turn to more traditional methods of making sure our family has food on the table. One of the most effective methods is canning and preserving fruits and produce.

Another reason so many of us love home canning is because it gives us more control of what we”re eating. Those with large vegetable gardens cannot possibly eat everything that they harvest, and besides freezing, canning and preserving is a great way to ensure that all that healthy food doesn”t go to waste.

Basically, canning and preserving your fruits and vegetables is one step up from cooking. It requires careful attention to both the freshness and the quality of the food being preserved.

Canning and preserving is traditionally done using glass ”mason” jars and two part lids; a seal and a ring. All canned foods need to be heat processed after being spooned into mason jars. Why? Because the air and the food itself contain naturally occurring bacteria, mold and yeast. If left uncontrolled, these microorganisms will cause food deterioration and spoilage.

The most common method of destroying harmful microorganisms in canned food is heat processing. By ensuring the correct temperature and length of processing time, heat processing also exhausts or vents gases from the far. Once the jar is cooled, a vacuum is created and the lid is pushed down over the jar, creating a seal.

High acid foods such as lemons, pickles, gooseberries, apples, peaches, and tomatoes can be heat treated at 212F (100C) in a boiling water canner, which is basically a very large, deep pot with a lid. High acid foods have a PH level of 4.6 or lower.

Foods that have little natural acid such as carrots, beets, green beans and asparagus can also be heat processed, but it should be done in a pressure canner, not a boiling water canner. They have a higher temperature requirement of 240F (116C), which cannot be reached by boiling water.

The supplies that will be required include mason jars, which are widely available in a variety of sizes, ”snap” or two piece lids, a boiling water canner and/or a pressure canner. It should be pointed out that a pressure canner is NOT the same thing as a pressure cooker, as they differ in both design and function. Do NOT use a pressure cooker in place of a pressure canner.

Certainly, charcoal grilling requires more time and carefulness than gas, from lighting and building the briquettes to waiting for the coals to get hot to managing the fire.

Since you ca not dial down the heat of white-hot cinders, it is a good strategy to leave empty spaces on the lower grill broiler (areas without briquettes). These cool spaces enable for better control, letting you to sear food first over the hot spots before transplanting it to cooler parts to finish cooking.

Charcoal grills are also cheaper than gas grills, though the cost of charcoal will add up over the years. Charcoal is also more itinerant than gas grills. A sack of charcoal can easily be chucked into the car and taken to the park or beach. And let”s face it–charcoal also involves an appealing element of danger. Playing with fire is entertaining. (Surely, this can be a plus or minus, depending on who”s behind the fire.)

The Judgement

At last, any assignation of what is best comes down to considerations of convenience, flavor, cost and practicality. If you have a tiny veranda, a huge gas grill just will not work. Wonderful grilling can be had over either gas or charcoal flames. The choice for me is easy. The taste makes charcoal grills the winner.

The Way To A Perfect Roast Dinner

Roast dinners are a British institution. Sunday”s simply wouldn”t be the same without the smell of meat cooking away in the oven all morning and sitting down to a meal sometime in the afternoon that consists of roast meat, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, roast parsnips and vegetables all topped off with a lovely thick gravy.

This is the way British family life works on a Sunday. The family sit down to their roast dinner and then proceed to spend the afternoon sleeping it off. It has even become the standard fare for celebrating Christmas. But how to get the best from it?

Roast dinners are, essentially, pretty easy to cook. However, a huge difference can be made to the flavour of the meat when you take time to consider the perfect way to cook it. It”s not the cheapest way to eat these days so you may as well get the best out of it.

Many people just wrap a joint or chicken or turkey up in foil and throw it in the oven until it looks cooked. However, this can lead to very dry, flavourless meat. The best option is to use a rotisserie. Many modern ovens come equipped with rotisseries these days yet not nearly enough people use them.

Rotisseries are far from being a fancy gadget to add expense to an oven. They are, in fact, a very healthy way to cook meat.

Skewer your chosen meat onto your rotisserie and baste with your chosen coating. This can be one purchased from a shop or alternatively, there are many recipes to be found on the internet for full flavour rotisserie additions. You could also make one of your own if you are that way inclined.

Basting can be done at regular intervals throughout the cooking process. However, even if you choose not to add any extra flavouring, rotisserie cooking is still the best way to go. The meat will be cooked evenly to perfection with no dry spots. It will also be much healthier as it will not be sitting in fat.
Juices from the meat will drip out and away from it to ensure you get the most tender, healthy piece of meat you could wish to serve your family.

For those who like a bit of an outer crust to their meat, simply increase the temperature of the rotisserie oven for the first fifteen minutes. This will seal the outside, forming a traditional crust and seal in all the flavours of the meat.

If your rotisserie comes with a choice of cooking fuel, then charcoal is a very good idea. You can chose to smoke herbs on the coals which will gently infuse a particular flavour into your meat as well as giving off a wonderful aroma. There are the obvious options like smoking rosemary whilst cooking lamb on a rotisserie but you can play around with anything you fancy and find your own unique combinations.

The rest of the roast dinner can e prepared in the usual fashion but use a rotisserie for your meat and you will be gaining Brownie points all over the place along with a reputation for the best roast meat in town!

A Wine Of The Month Club Location Guide — The Wine Producing Areas Of California

Napa Valley is often recognized for producing quality wines more than any other grape growing location in California by wine clubs and consumers. The words “Napa Valley” on the label can result in a price twice as much as similar quality wines produced elsewhere. Some consumers even look specifically for the words “Napa Valley” on a label because they feel it guarantees purchasing a superior variety.

While Napa”s reputation for fine varieties is well deserved, is a $100 bottle of Napa Cabernet really any better than a $30 Cabernet from down the way in Sonoma, California? This question is why winemakers and wine of the month club selection committees are highly aware of how famous locations within the industry can spur sales and send prices higher while lesser-known regions that produce excellent varieties often go undiscovered simply because their location is not recognizable to consumers.

This article looks at the restrictions on including place names on labels and the producing areas of California. While Napa Valley wines are definitely high quality, wine clubs often feature these other areas because they also produce first class beverages.

American Viticultural Areas

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, a department of the U.S. Treasury defined American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) within the country with many of them being in California. While there are many producing areas of California, most consumers probably couldn”t rattle off more than a few unless they are knowledgeable because of study or membership in a wine of the month club. The system of AVAs attempts to certify what”s on the label is true as consumers often use location as a way to predict value.

The San Francisco Wine Institute defines producing American Viticultural Areas as “delineated grape growing areas distinguishable by geographic, climatic, and historic features.” The law governs what percentage of the grapes must originate in the place named on the label and mandates that the drink be made in that location.

While some AVA regions are huge, critics feel the system is only marginally helpful to consumers and wine clubs. For example, the Ohio River Valley AVA includes 26,000 square miles, spanning Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Knowing a food came from that huge area is helpful only in that we know it was from somewhere in the U.S.

The grape growing regions of California are separated into four AVA”s that include the North Coast AVA, the Central Coast AVA, the Southern California AVA, and the Central Valley AVA.

The North Coast AVA

The North Coast AVA covers over three million acres located in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake counties along with parts of Marin and Solano counties. Roughly half of the production in California comes from the North Coast AVA. If it is more specific, stating Napa Valley instead of North Coast on the label, it is assumed to be a better variety by a wine of the month club because North Coast designates a larger area than Napa Valley.

The more mountainous, higher altitude locations in the North Coast AVA produce more intense, tannic wines while the warmer valleys produce riper fruit. This area is probably the most well known producing region in the state and is a favorite of many wine clubs.

The Central Coast AVA

The Central Coast AVA covers the San Francisco, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz areas.

The San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, and the Pacific Ocean cool the Central Coast AVA area, providing warm days and cool nights, classic grape growing conditions. Much of this land is flat with rolling hills that accommodate large vineyards like the largest contiguous vineyard in the world, San Bernabe, on the recommended list of most every wine of the month club. With less rainfall than the northern areas, the Central Coast AVA is generally without clouds, fog, or severe winds, but the nighttime temperatures can drop 40 degrees because of the area”s proximity to the ocean.

The Southern California AVA

This region extends from north of the City of Los Angeles to the southern border below the City of San Diego. Although this area is influenced by the Pacific Ocean, temperatures are generally quite warm.

The Central Valley AVA

The vast interior valleys of the state comprise the Central Valley AVA, including the Sacramento Valley, the San Joaquin Valley, the Delta area, and the Sierra Foothills.

With no ocean breezes or cooling influences, the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys are home to mass produced wines that often end up in jugs or boxes instead of on wine of the month club recommendation lists. Temperatures rise in the vast interior valley and are cooled by maritime breezes pulled from the San Francisco Bay, cooling the Delta area and allowing the grapes to hang longer on the vines for premium flavors. Higher altitudes and descending streams from the Sierra Nevada mountain range cool the Sierra Foothills.

It”s true – it”s a fast paced world and it seems that people are busier today than ever before in history. People add more and more things to do, which compensates for the speed modern technology brings to tasks. This then leads to personal lives that are sometimes left in the lurch. Many types of chores get neglected as well as other things. Unfortunately, that includes fixing meals as well. I guess that”s exactly why people are always on the look out for ways to make dinner recipes quick and easy. It”s nice to know there are a lot of ideas around for quick meals.

Forty years ago people cooked a lot more from scratch – hand cooking was the norm. Sausage wasn”t purchased, it was ground into casings from scratch. Simple meals like spaghetti involved slaving over a noodle press and cooking sauce from scratch for hours. Meal preparation often took a whole day. With far fewer women in the work force at that time that was often the norm.

It wasn”t until much later that pre-packaged and ready made foods appeared in homes. Instant cake mixes became more common for example. The old days of cake baking, slowly changed from mixing ingredients such as vanilla, flour, eggs, milk, carefully melted chocolate and many many other ingredients into simply opening a box and mixing in some eggs and milk. Baking a cake today is much, much easier than it used to be. In the old days it could easily take half a day or more to properly bake and frost a cake. Change has truly happened.

These days there are loads of places to learn how to cook meals better and more quickly. Many sources are now available to tell people how to make quicker meals. The television cooking shows are more popular than ever. Things were much tougher during the times when Julia Child talked about fancy French cooking as the Galloping Gourmet hit the sauce every day. Today”s cooking shows focus on easy every day meals for, and to be prepared by, every day people. There are lots of techniques available for combining fresh foods with pre-packaged elements. The cooking shows today deliver quick cooking meals that look a lot more complex but are still easy enough for the general public to complete.

Another nice thing is that pre-packaged and ready made foods aren”t as bland as they used to be either. Most current supermarkets now have deli”s where hot meals are made. It”s almost like buying a restaurant meal while shopping at the store, then bringing it home to eat. Another plus is that many of these foods can be refrigerated or frozen to eat another day. That”s another meal idea coming into favor right now too. Many people have found that it”s often easier to prepare all your meals for the week sometime during the weekend, then freeze them for reheating later during the week. And a good thing is that many foods don”t suffer from being frozen and reheated.
