Serving Dinner To Dinner Service Which Is Which?

By Anna Stenning

The term dinner service can be applied to two different concepts, dinner service can mean the service provided by restaurant or waiting staff whilst servicing tables, we have all seen on programmes like Hell”s kitchen the kitchen staff calling out for service, meaning that meals have been plated and are ready to serve the awaiting hungry customers. Basically the term covers restaurant staff from seating a customer at a table, taking orders, serving meals and making sure that customers needs are catered for the duration of their visit. This also applies to servants, waiting on their masters tables.

The other term dinner service actually applies to the crockery or china used to serve meals on or from. A traditional dinner service will comprise of dinner plates, side plates, dessert bowls, soup bowls, cups and saucers and serving dishes.

As with progression the dinner service has grown to cover all aspects of dining, no longer are we very British and cater simply for the good old roast, our palates have expanded to enjoy a wider variety of cuisines from around the world, so too have the ranges of dinner service we buy.

Having a dinner service which caters for larger numbers of people doesn”t necessarily just apply to catering establishments, many people love to entertain in their own domestic settings, and have a set of dinnerware which matches, making the table setting look exceptional.

Traditionally a table would be set for the number of guests which required waiting on, all settings would be set to include the dishes which would be served during the meal, for example a dinner plate would be the main setting with a soup bowl on top, tea or side plate to the side ready for bread or a roll which would be served with the soup and cutlery for all courses set out at the start of the meal, silver service (silver service applies to the way the cutlery is set is set for each course, and the way the staff are trained to serve and clear away plates).

The dinner service would then include all bowls, platters and serving dishes from which a meal is served, these days the number dishes and accessories used to actually cook a meal can be reduced with the introduction of oven to tableware. Oven to tableware meant that for could actually be prepared in the same dishes as it was cooked in, instead of having to be changed into fancy bowls to make it look more attractive.

Buying a dinner service can be quite a costly experience, largely due to the amount of items required, which in most cases apart from initial buying of plates and bowls, have to be brought as single units. Another reason for expense is the quality of the dinnerware which is bought; buying a higher quality may well ensure less breakages, however we all know that crockery of any description is quite unforgiving if dropped, catering for these kind of accidents is essential as accidents happen, but hopefully flaws or imperfections are reduced slightly when spending a little more.

The good thing about buying a dinner service is that it can be an investment, not only this, it doesn”t have to be brought all at one time, you can choose the style of table and dinnerware you require and add bits to it as and when you have the money to do so. This makes perfect sense, as long as you can be sure that the range you choose isn”t going to be discontinued in the near future, although this is something which can be looked into and in most cases manufacturers will make you aware if they are planning to discontinue a range.

Another nice idea that many people are choosing to do these days is ask for dinner service items as wedding presents, this way many people can buy a product from your wish list, building up your dinner service and ensuring you don”t double up on serving dishes or bowls. It makes a lovely wedding gift idea as so many people these days already live together and have many of the household items they require before getting married, choosing a dinner service as a wedding gift provides a beautiful present which many people have contributed towards, it”s also a usable gift which you can keep.

Broccoli: The Blood Sugar Wonder

By Casey Yew

Do you have diabetes? Or are you worried that you and your loved ones may be prone to this condition? You are not alone. As of 2000, 171 million people worldwide have diabetes, according to the World Health Organization. And in the United States alone, there are as many as 23.6 million Americans who have this condition as of 2007. That is according to the statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Indeed, diabetes is a serious problem faced by many people today. But broccoli may hold the answer to fighting this disease. This article will show you how broccoli can help reverse the negative effects of diabetes.

But first, let”s have a look at the story behind diabetes. It will help you understand better how broccoli comes into play in this condition.

What Diabetes Is And What Causes It

In general, diabetes is defined as the condition wherein a person has high levels of glucose, also known as blood sugar. It is classified into two categories depending on what causes it.

First is called Type 1 diabetes. This type of diabetes happens when the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed. Because of this, glucose levels become unregulated, which in turn may cause a spike in a person”s glucose levels.

Then there”s Type 2 diabetes. This happens when body cells that normally react to insulin do not respond to the hormone. The condition is called insulin resistance.

Why It Is Important To Combat Diabetes

Genetics is the main reason why some people are more prone to diabetes than others. However, obesity can also trigger diabetes in people who are not genetically predisposed to this condition.

If left untreated, diabetes may cause a host of problems such as blindness and heart problems. In worst cases, some parts of the body may have to be amputated.

How Broccoli Helps Reverse the Effects of Diabetes

In a 2008 study conducted by the University of Warwick, it showed how a compound found in broccoli can help reverse the effects of diabetes. The team led by Professor Paul Thornalley found that sulforaphane – the compound found in broccoli – reverses the damage to the blood vessels caused by diabetes. The destruction of these blood vessels is the main reason why diabetes causes heart problems.

Sulforaphane does its wonders by protecting the blood vessels and reduces the levels of molecules that can also damage these vessels.

Caveat

But those who expect a miracle drug from sulforaphane may have to wait before it becomes a reality. The results found by Professor Thornalley”s team just came from laboratory experiments and still needs to be tested in real life situations.

For now, there are several things that you can do to prevent, or at least reduce the effects of diabetes in your body. For Type 1 diabetes, there are insulin injections and pumps that could help regulate your body”s glucose levels. On the other hand, exercising regularly, eating healthy and taking medication helps if you have Type 2 diabetes.

Your Restaurant Guide to the Best Dining in Houston

By Billy Kite

We all tend to rush through our lives, often forgetting how nice it is to just settle down and enjoy eating out at a good restaurant for a change. Most restaurants these days offer reservations, ordering and reservation services on their websites.

The problem is that you often have to search through several different places on the Internet in order to find what you are looking for. Now, there is an online restaurant guide that gives you all of the information you need right in one place. Here are some of the best dining places in Houston to choose from.

Sambuca Jazz Cafe

This place is the atmosphere to be in and the place to enjoy quality American cuisine. With a happening bar and cool tunes, it is downtown Houston”s greatest hot spot.

The atmosphere consists of faux leopard skin prints and black decor that allows patrons to be comfortable while enjoying the energized surroundings. The bar side of Sambuca”s provides live music every day of the week and maintains a sound level that is comfortably set at good background levels for the diners.

There is a nice array of entrees to choose from which range in the upper scale of pricing. Choices provide a delightful feast for the eyes and often large enough helpings to adequately feed two people.

Guests are required to limit their dining to two hours and the minimum is $17 per person with a 15 percent gratuity. For those attending the nearby theater, promotional discounts allow for a three course meal at $35 dollars which may be enjoyed before or after performances. A great choice as one of the best dining experiences in downtown Houston.

Pita Pit

This is Houston”s answer to the need for an alternative to eating out at fast food restaurants. The menu offers fast service, but a wide array of tasty, healthy and fresh choices.

They have gotten rid of the breads and buns that send the carbohydrate counts through the roof and instead serve everything in Lebanese-style pita pockets. The motto is “fresh thinking and healthy eating” for patrons with fast paced lifestyles. Some of their offerings include:

* Savory meats that are perfectly grilled
* A unique mix of cheeses that are full of flavor

If you are especially fond of one of their main menu items, it just might be their special that month.

BJ”s Brewhouse

In 1978 BJ”s began with a pizzeria that headlined their special recipe for deep dish pizza. In 1996 they added their first brewery to one of the restaurants. Now, new menu items and new beers continue to be added to the regular line up and it has become a high-energy and fun environment for adults and children alike.

A driving passion to offer extraordinary value and menu items is at the heart of their success. They also strive to support the communities in which each of their restaurants resides.

The creators of BJ”s have never forgotten that their customers are the biggest and most important part of their success. Why not take the kids or your significant other along with some friends to eat out at BJ”s Brewhouse tonight?

Eating Healthy — Chocolate Replacement

By Chris Brown

Chocolate. It is one of our favorite pastimes! Every season we wrap it up differently. We see it wrapped as a heart or egg or pumpkin or turkey or Christmas tree. Sometimes we eat it. Sometimes we drink it. We can even cook with it. We can mix it with caramel or peanut butter or have it by itself. Any way you look at it, chocolate is a delicious treat that is always there.

In an effort to be healthy, I have had to give up this wonderful food. Why? It contains caffeine. What a sad day that was when I realized I wouldn”t be able to eat chocolate anymore. What is a person to do? I couldn”t go through life depriving myself, right?

The good news: I found a chocolate replacement: Carob Powder!

Carob is very healthy. It is loaded with calcium! Carob contains 352 mg per 100 grams; whereas, milk contains 120-130 mg of calcium per 100 grams. For those of you watching your calories, carob contains about 60% less calories than chocolate. It is also high in phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Carob has approximately 8% protein and contains vitamins A, B, B2, B3 and D.

Carob is also significantly different to chocolate”s chemical make up. That is good news for those of you that are allergic to chocolate. It has been found that people with allergic reactions to chocolate, do not have the same reactions to carob!

Carob does not contain caffeine or theobromine. Both of those are stimulants which can be addictive and cause allergies. That takes all the fun out of eating chocolate, doesn”t it?

Carob Powder is a wonderful chocolate replacement. In recipes, it can be replaced for cocoa or chocolate. To replace cocoa in a recipe, it is a 1:1 ratio. To replace chocolate in a recipe, you can use 3 T. of Carob for every square of chocolate.

Now, I have a wonderful, healthy alternative to chocolate. I use carob powder to make hot chocolate. I use it for my kids when they want chocolate milk. I use it in baking when I am making chocolate treats. It”s one more way that I can be healthy and still eat all the great things that life has to offer!

As always, when cooking use the best ingredients you can afford. Buy organic whenever possible. Do your best to keep those nasty toxins out of your diet. Use raw and unprocessed whenever possible. Eat healthy, feel healthy, be healthy. Enjoy life.
