Decorate Cakes Like A Pro How Sweet It Is

By Stephen Hall

Oh how we envy those cakes that just make us want to run and get the old Kodak or whatever camera we happen to have laying around the house. We imagine being able to come up with decorating ideas like that. Well, it is easier than you think. With a few simple tricks, you TOO can be decorating cakes just like a pro. Keep reading to learn some really cool tips.

One of the keys to a really great looking cake is the cake icer tip. I strongly recommend getting a number 789 icer tip. You absolutely cannot tell the difference between a cake YOU decorated with this tip from a cake decorated by a pro. Yes, you need a steady hand too, but the tip is going to make all the difference in the world.

What about those cupcakes that seem to spiral up to the clouds? You now the kind I am talking about. They are really so easy to make. All you need to do is get yourself a star decorating tip. Hold it about a quarter inch above the cupcake at a 90 degree angle to the cupcake surface. Start at the outer edge and pipe out some icing all around the outer edge. Then, simply pull the tip away, bring it inside the outer circle and pipe another circle inside the outer one. If you like, you can pipe another circle inside the inner one if there is room. I told you it is simple.

What if you have a pattern that you want to use for your cake? This is so simple that it is a joke. What you do is actually ice the pattern itself. Put the pattern on the back of a cookie sheet and start piping the icing onto it, making sure you put a disposable decorating bag over it first. Then, all you need to do is turn the bag over, with the design on it, and place it over your cake. When you are done, lift the bag off the cake and the design will be transferred. Yes, it is THAT simple.

These are just a few of the many tips that you can use to make you look like a professional cake decorator. If you would like more great cake decorating tips, in my signature you will find a link to a great resource that will give you all the cake decorating tips that you could possibly want.

You do not have to be a pro to decorate like a pro.

Take a Drive Through Texas Wine Country

By Ki Gray

If a trip to visit the famous vineyards of Napa Valley, California isn”t in the budget this summer, try a scenic drive through some local wine country. Central Texas offers a number of locally produced wines, from the nationally recognized to smaller family owned operations.

A trip down Highway 290 West not only offers rustic Texas landscapes with its own kind of beauty, but also several vineyards along the way. Johnson City has the Texas Hills Vineyard, with soil considered to be like the coveted Tuscan countryside in Italy. Becker Vineyards in Stonewall boasts 46 acres of grapevines and three acres of lavender, which blooms in May and June. Also in Stonewall is the Grape Creek Vineyard with the only completely underground wine cellar in Texas. Continuing west on Highway 290, Fredericksburg has a number of vineyards, including Bell Mountain Wine Cellars in business for 33 years and Chisholm Trail Winery.

If taking in lake views while tasting Texas wines sounds nice, head north on Highway 281 to the family owned Spicewoods Vineyard in Marble Falls. Fall Creek Vineyards on the shores of Lake Buchanan is composed of 65 acres of vineyards making award wining wines in the “French tradition combined with California technology.” Take in some Lake Travis views at Lago Vista”s Flat Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery.

Heading south a wine lover can find the Sister Creek Vineyards in Boerne, which is housed in a historic cotton gin. Or, in New Braunfels try the Dry Comal Creek Vineyards and one might as well stop in Gruene Hall while in that area.

All these wineries offer tours and tastings and visitors are encouraged to taste the lesser known wine varieties that Texas is gaining a reputation for producing. Ever heard of a sangiovese or malbec? How about a syrah? Texas soil is better suited to some of these more obscure wine varieties. While one can certainly find a Texas chardonnay, a viognier made in Texas may taste better. The Austin-American Statesman recently picked some favorite local wines like the Becker Vineyards Malbec 2006 or the Tuscan-style red Flat Creek Estates Super Texan 2006.

If wine tasting without the driving sounds a little more appealing, there are a number of local wine bars that offer a unique tasting experience. From the trendy to the cozy to the ostentatious wall of wines, Austin-American Statesman”s XLent section recently highlighted some local spots for a good glass of wine. Cork & Co. on South Congress was described as cozy while Cru: A Wine Bar has a “plush ambiance.” There is also Taste on Cesar Chavez Street and Uncorked Tasting Room and Wine Bar on East Seventh. An impressive wall of wine can be seen at Vino Vino on Guadalupe Street.

Whether hopping in the car to head downtown for the evening or driving west for the day, Austin and the surrounding Hill Country can offer something from the mildly curious wine-drinker to the passionate oenologist.

Weight Loss Pros & Cons – Mostly Cons

By Ian Newton

Why so many are taken in by weight loss promises.

Desperation, frustration, anxiety over health etc, lots of normal human reasons, but these reasons can render you vulnerable to dodgy products. Don”t despair, there is a real solution. How many advertisements have you seen for weight loss? The special exercise device that promises amazing results- Big Lie. If you read the small print, you will see it needs to be used in conjunction with a 800 a day calorie diet.

Of course you lose weight, its called starvation, loss of muscle mass, completely unsafe and unsustainable. What about the magic diet pills that work wonders according to the testimonials? Most of these pills do one of two things.

1. They block fat absorption in the small intestine. In theory this is OK, but! They also block the essential fatty acids; they are called essential because we need them to sustain life. They also block fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin A, D, E & K. Again life sustaining nutrients.

2. They are said to burn fat fast, blast the fat off! What they refer to is trying to increase your metabolic rate, i.e. they speed at which your liver processes fats.

Again this is Ok in theory, but! The process of stimulating liver function is not fast, nor is it simple, and is very much dependent on the state of toxicity in the gut and the cells, and the extra cellular matrix, i.e. the space between cells.

Exercise, increases your metabolism, but you have to be patient, as it can take up to 8 -12 weeks before this metabolic change occurs. So don”t give up too quickly. Most people quit before they reap the rewards of their exercise.

I can eat what ever I like and still lose weight. Lose all the weight you want without exercise. 2 more great big lies.

Think about for just a few minutes, and you will realize the folly of these stupid claims.

What about the amazing herbal teas. Maybe they have some validity, but most only remain on the market for the duration of an advertising blitz, and a couple of famous con men have been jailed over their weight loss tea scams.

But you say, all those people who have lost weight, it must be true, I saw it on TV.

Many marketingpromotions using celebrities to endorse a product are a sham.

Promoters of many weight loss products just buy them! A few thousand for a faded star and many thousands for a current star, depending on pulling power.

You may be shocked, and feel it is dishonest to have someone promote a programme who had not benefited from it. It is obvious to all that the world of product promotion is just smoke and mirrors.

Expensive protein drinks as meal replacements. Firstly they should not be expensive; these amino acids are not expensive additives. They are mostly soy or whey protein.

Secondly I do see an important role for these drinks, as a means of preventing muscle loss, during weight loss. But remember if you rely on these for more than one meal per day, what will happen when you stop taking them.

A good routine is a shake for breakfast, a light healthy lunch, shake in the afternoon, too keep your energy up and prevent the late afternoon low blood sugar, eating blitz, and another light healthy meal for dinner. You can replace a shake with a protein bar if you are out and about.

The best time for a protein bar is when you are tempted to buy a chocolate or some cake with coffee. When travelling I find it best to have the bar before I arrive at the gas station, so that I”m not hungry, and therefore won”t buy junk food.

No sugar diet food is also a big problem. Bottom line is, it doesn”t work, it has been shown to cause food cravings, and above all else it is toxic to your health. Sugar alternatives have historically proven to be a hazard for health. This dose not include the natural plant derived sweeteners.

OK, so enough of the negative stuff! So what does work? Firstly detox your liver and digestion. This is important stuff. Next, you have to exercise, it may not be what you want to hear, but it is essential. You must eat fewer carbohydrates, and increase protein, with reduced fat. Not rocket science but it”s true.

Certain supplements are important, such as a good quality multi, to ensure good nutrition, a quality omega 3 fish oil supplement and then some of the metabolism boosters, which may include:

Ginger, green coffee bean, green tea, L Carotene, Conjugated Linoleic acid, which comes from coconut oil, which by the way is important for weight loss.

Most importantly is the right mental attitude.

Have fun don”t stress over your weight, but do take as many positive actions as possible.

A Comparison of Three Coffee Brands: Miscela d\’Oro, Millstone and Lavazza

By Lili Rousso

Anyone who loves coffee will know that there is coffee and then there is gourmet coffee. There are many brands, and three of the most popular are Miscela d”Oro, Millstone and Lavazza. Each has its pros and cons as to what makes it the brew of choice for some and not for others. The two main areas of comparison are taste and price.

Miscela d”Oro is known as one of the best brews of Italian coffee on the market. The product can be purchased pre-ground, as whole beans or espresso pods. Espresso pods are created especially for use in ESE espresso makers.

Like Lavazza, most types of Miscela d”Oro coffee are a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans. Of course, the company also has its 100 percent Arabica coffee as well for those who don”t favor the Arabica-Robusta blends. Arabica provides a milder flavor and less caffeine than Robusta blends. The beans used are acquired from a number of regions such as Africa, Asia and South and Central America.

Lavazza”s line of grounded or espresso is ideal for coffee drinkers who like the sweet aroma of freshly brewed coffee just before they consume it. One of the interesting things about Lavazza is that they were the first company to create different blends of coffee using beans from various countries or locations.

The beans used to create the flavor and scent of Lavazza blends are from South America or Africa. The espresso is made from either Arabica and Robusta beans combined or 100 percent Arabica alone. Like some other gourmet coffee companies, Lavazza also creates specific machines to brew their espressos in.

The beans that make up the Lavazza line come from a number of locations including South America and Africa. Its blend of African with Arabica ranks highly among even the most discerning coffee drinkers.

The ever-popular Millstone coffee comes in a number of varieties, namely organic, flavored, roasted and decaffeinated. This ensures that there is something for every type of gourmet coffee lover. Millstone also prides itself on being able to suit just about every taste. The company uses a particular species of Arabica bean grown in locations like Indonesia, Hawaii, the Caribbean and South and Central America. The seeds are specially selected and the plants are well cared for year round. Only a small portion of the large number of Arabica beans grown around the world meets Millstone”s high standards.

Robusta coffee plants require less care than the Arabica variety. This is due to the fact that after they have ripened, Robusta beans remain on the plant, while Arabica beans fall off. This is what makes it necessary for the extra attention given to the Arabica plants. The beans must be periodically picked to prevent them from being wasted.

People who frequent coffee shops will find they mostly use the Arabica beans. For those who prefer the Robusta variety it can generally be found in supermarkets. The Arabica coffee tends to have a more delicate taste, while the Robusta, is stronger and has more caffeine content. Typically, Arabica is described as having a richer taste than Robusta.

The Miscela d”Oro and Lavazza coffee blends go for slightly higher prices than Millstone products. Side by side comparisons are difficult based on the wide variety of options offered by each. For those who like the taste of freshly ground coffee, any of these three have suitable offerings.

Coffee Brewing – How To Make The Best Cup at Home

By JR Lang

Coffee is certainly the most popular beverage on earth. In fact, it is worlds second biggest commodity, second only to oil, and those are pretty impressive stats. The history of coffee is an impressive one as well.

Coffee is tracked back to c850 when a small goat herder from Ethiopia know as Kaldi discovered some red berries from a local shrub. He noticed his goats became hyper after eating the berries and so he tried them himself and it altered his mood, for the better of course. The rest as they say is history and coffee spread throughout the lands like a wild fire.

The first coffee was roasted and boiled by Arabs in c1100 who made qahwa, which was a beverage made from plants. Well, we have come along way from qahwa, all the way to Starbucks drive-thrus on every corner and an unlimited amount of blends, brews, and styles of the popular drink.

Coffee is an integral part of the day, from the first morning cup all the way down to the most popular after dinner drink. It is at the center of social functions as well as the workday.

There are countless recipes both sweet and savory that use coffee, including ice cream. It is both a very unique flavor as well as a mood enhancer and stimulant due to its caffeine properties, and thanks to the process of decaffeination, those who prefer to skip the energy boost can still enjoy the aroma and flavor.

While many love and enjoy the flavor and richness of the coffee house blends and brews, it can really put a dent on the wallet with the average cost per cup being over $3. It seems that there is squeamishness when it comes to home brewing for some because they may believe that they cannot get that same quality of brew at home as they can in the commercial coffee house. In reality with some practice and fresh beans, grinds, correct techniques and brewers, it is very possible to get a superb coffee house quality cup at home.

Also with todays K cup brewers that are easy and brew one cup at a time of coffee house quality brew and require no measuring, or guessing, there is no reason to save some major bucks and make your favorite cup at home. They also allow you to try a variety of strengths and flavors to find your favorite.

All You Need To Know About Asparagus!!

By Mary Anne Durkee

ts asparagus season and time for you to dig up some good asparagus recipes and treat yourselves and your family with this wonderful vegetable! Before you start cooking asparagus, here is some interesting information about this wonderful vegetable:-

Asparagus as Medicine

Asparagus, also known simply as grass, asper or aspar grass and also spar grass has been used in early times as medicine, especially because of its Diuretic properties. They were used in India as a part of Ayurvedic medicines. Asparagus is low in calories has no fat or cholesterol and is a good source of folic acid, potassium, dietary fiber and rutin. There is even an amino acid named asparagines that is named after this vegetable as it has large amounts of it.

Asparagus in History

Did you know that asparagus has been used for ages and there is even an asparagus recipe in the oldest surviving book of recipes, the De re coquinaria, Book III or Apicius from the third century AD!? The Greeks, Romans and Egyptians consumed asparagus fresh when in season and dried and stored it up for winter.

Types of asparagus

The most common types of asparagus include the white, green and purple asparagus. The white asparagus, nick named white gold in Northern Europe is simply green asparagus grown beneath a cover of soil or hay. They have a crunchier texture. The purple asparagus is slightly sweeter than green.

Selecting and Storing Asparagus

Select well colored asparagus spears that are not too thick and have no blemishes or bruises. Check the cut part to see if it is fresh and ensure that the bids are tightly closed.

After buying your asparagus, remove the band and put the bases in half a glass of water. Before refrigerating, cover the asparagus and the glass of water loosely in a plastic packet. Remember to keep changing the water. It is advisable to cook it fresh and not to let it stay on the refrigerator for more that 3 days. Check this video on fresh asparagus.

Trimming and Peeling Asparagus

To trim your asparagus, take out a spear and hold either side of it and bend. The spear will break and you will have the tender part in your hands. Use that spear as a reference and cut the other spears. If you are cooking your asparagus as soon as you buy it then leave the band on. It will help to hold the spears in place while cutting.

Peel your asparagus spears only if they are too thick. Remember that the skin of thick asparagus doesn”t make it thick but has fibers that don”t allow proper cooking. So, you just need to peel the spear randomly so that it can be cooked thoroughly. This will ensure that the spear gets cooked well. While peeling asparagus, lay it down on the table and use a vegetable peeler from the tip to the stem.

Cooking Asparagus

You can roast, bake, grill, steam or boil this vegetable and come up with tasty asparagus dishes no matter which method you choose. The most common combination is grilled asparagus with hollandaise sauce. I love it when my asparagus is Stir fried and served with chicken. You can also simply steam asparagus and serve it with butter. Asparagus pie , Asparagus Soup , Asparagus Penne Pasta and even pickled asparagus are just a few of the dishes that use this wonderful vegetable. Here are some cooking tips for you:

Adding some butter salt and pepper while steaming, boiling or grilling asparagus, this adds to its taste. You can also add sauteed garlic or shallots to make it even more tasty.Try to cook asparagus in an upright position as most of the nutrients are found in the tips

Now that you know all you need to about asparagus, you can start cooking your asparagus!

All you Need to Know about Tankards and Hipflask Gifts

By Suzy Powell

Tankards and Hip Flasks have histories all of their own. They are still used today and make ideal gifts as they can be personalised.

Hip flasks have been around since the Middle Ages, when they were said to have carried prepared fruit.
Later in the 18th century they were used by members of the gentry. They have been made from a variety of matierals including pigs bladders. Alcohol was smuggled onto warships by women using hip flasks hidden in their petty coats. Older hip Flasks made from precious metals are now sought after collectors items.

A Tankard was also a historic drinking vessel usually to carry alcoholic beverages such as beer and ale. The tankard was widely used in northern Europe especially Scandinavia, Germany, and Great Britain.

Tankards were also used in colonial America from the second half of the 16th century until the end of the 18th century. There were many different designs and as time progressed many more appeared being made from various materials.

The body was usually cylindrical, with a hinged lid, with or without ornate finial, generally a thumb piece, and a handle that is often in a scroll shape. On the handles of many 17th- and 18th-century tankards were whistles that were used for summoning waiters.

Though they were sometimes made of horn, carved ivory, pottery, and porcelain with metal mounts, tankards most often were made from precious metals especially silver, and pewter. Larger tankards were used in the late 17th century certain commissioned by corporate bodies or guilds for presentation and ceremonial use. Reproductions of traditional tankard styles date from the 19th century and continue to be produced in the 20th century.

Thesedays tankards and hip flasks are available in stainless steel, pewter or a combination of both. There are a variety of sizes, and styles, and most can be engraved.

Aging: Do You Want To Be The Tortoise Or The Hare?

By James Beller

Do you remember when you were a child and having to wait a whole hour for something seemed like an eternity? When you couldn”t wait for school to get out and three more months just felt like it may as well be forever? I know I do. I also remember my elders admonishing me “Just you wait: the older you get the faster time goes!” Come to think of it, none of us believed a word of it until we experienced the phenomenon for ourselves. But is it really true or does it just seem that way? Maybe it”s both!

There are a few theories floating around that may help explain this marvel. In logical and mathematical terms, we know that time goes by exactly the same for everyone. But for the older folks (of which I don”t claim to be among quite yet), the term ”Don”t blink or you”ll miss it” rings more true every day.

One of the theories regarding the speed of aging has to do with the scientific and intimidating facts about human DNA. As we age, all of the cells in our bodies become progressively laden with toxic accumulation, and various factors from our present day hectic lifestyle (think EMF pollution) can lead to DNA mutations.

Since our bodies are constantly producing new cells, and the DNA replicates itself each time, if there are poisons or compromised DNA in our cells, the result will be the increased degeneration of the next round of replicated cells. And this deterioration is what we commonly refer to as aging. This is also referred to as the Somatic Mutation Theory.

Couple this with the undisputed fact that body processes slow down as we age, e.g., metabolism, elimination, recovery from stress, and you can see why on a cellular level, things start to slide as it gets more and more hard for the body to keep up with these demands. Unhealthy cells creating that many more unhealthy cells only compound as time goes on.

As our bodily processes including our mental faculties and thought processes slow down, what used to take only a few minutes might take twice as long, leaving us only able to get half as much done in a day. We end up scratching our head and asking “Where did the day go, anyway?”

Fortunately, this slowing and deterioration that we speak of is not entirely inevitable. There are many things that can be done to slow and even reverse the aging process. And no, it”s not in the next miracle pill or potion touted on a late-night infomercial. Instead, the idea is to give your body the most optimal nutrition possible-raw fruits and vegetables.

An ever growing number of people who have gradually changed over to the raw diet, simply by incorporating more and more raw foods, have experienced remarkable results. Not only does the raw food diet cleanse toxins from the cells and keep those oh-so-important DNA strands healthily reproducing themselves, but also it leads to overall improvement in your health which can help prevent your bodily processes from slowing and deteriorating at the rapid pace that the cooked food crowd has to suffer.

A clean, healthy body will not tolerate a dull, slow mind. In Tonya Zavasta”s book “Raw Foods and Hot Yoga”, she refers to this problem as the ”cooked food stupor” that people need to be delivered from. The raw food diet can definitely go a long way in waking us all up to a much higher level of energy and clarity; hence, our perception changes and life no longer just passes us by while we strive to keep up.

While this article only scratches the surface of the benefits of the raw food diet, there are many more resources available. Three helpful web resources which specifically focus on the anti-aging effects of the raw food diet are: http://rawfoodists.blogspot.com, http://rawfoodme.wordpress.com, and http://kaboodle.com/rawfood

What Is The Secret To Making Gourmet Coffees?

By MIKE SELVON

We know that gourmet means high quality products with exotic ingredients or simply fine foods and drink, or something along those lines. The same holds true when referring to gourmet coffees; they are a blend of the best coffee beans that have been harvested at exactly the proper time.

It is coffee that has been processed by the most skilled artisans who have roasted the beans to perfection. The beans are then made into a variety of blends and numerous types of high quality coffees of unsurpassed taste. In other words, these are not the brands of it that you will find in your local grocery store.

After being picked, the beans are normally processed in one of two ways; they can either be soaked or washed to remove all of the chaff from each bean or a more natural drying method may be employed. Both methods have their own advantages and will produce great coffee if done correctly.

After the beans have been washed and processed, they usually get roasted at a very high temperature and then cooled rapidly according to individual practices. Generally, darker beans will produce the more full bodied and stronger gourmet coffees. As well, the darker that the ground one looks the longer the original roasting process took, which usually means a better taste. If you need more information on how to choose the beans, then you can go online where there is quite a bit of information available.

Generally, there are two ways to get your morning fix of java. You can be one of those morning commuters that rush to get in line at their local coffee house for that cup of regular or gourmet coffee, latte or espresso, or you can brew your own cup at home with your own coffee machine where you can leisurely drink it, read the paper and then get ready to leave for work. Of course, another added bonus of brewing your own is that wonderful aroma that just seems to say that it is going to be a great day.

Many believe that the secret to making good coffee is choosing the best coffee beans, and there are two major types the Arabica and the Robusta. The Robusta is hardier and more resistant to diseases but is not considered a gourmet blend. Instead, it is often used in commercial blends. Now, the Arabica is said to produce very fine one and it is normally sold to the retail coffee houses that sell gourmet coffees.
