Surviving an Emergency in Your Car

By Jack Landry

A disaster could strike at anytime. It will not wait for you to get home and say “I”m ready.”

If you are out completing errands you may be able to get to your car, but the roads to your home may be damaged. It is important to place 72-hour kits in your care because you may not be able to reach your home in emergency situations.

Vehicle 72-hour kits are generally the same as the ones that should be kept in your home, but there are a few differences. Water is an absolute necessity and should be a key element of your vehicle kit.

Water that you are going to use in storage should not be stored in 2 gallon rinsed out milk jugs. It is very difficult to wash all of the milk out of these containers.

The milk will decay and the bacteria will contaminate your water. Your stored water should be as pure and clean as possible.

Other types of containers that can be used for storing water include clean 2-liter soda bottles, collapsible water containers, or used water containers. No matter what the conditions of the emergency are, you will need water.

Food is also very important, but a human can do without it slightly longer than he can without water. Protein and energy bars are an easy thing to store in the car for sudden emergencies.

However, if you snack on these bars, make sure you replace them as soon as possible. Packages of dried fruit are also a great option.

In addition, it is likely that you will need a first aid kit in an emergency. The emergency medical and police force services are stretched enough throughout a normal day.

They will not be able to keep up with the soaring demand for their services in a disaster situation. You will need to be prepared to attend to any medical problems that you, one of your loved ones or others may be dealing with.

Even though you may not have the skills of a doctor or a nurse, you may save a life by simply having a basic first aid kit on hand. Do not take any risks by not keeping one on hand.

Likewise, you will also need to be prepared to defend yourself. If an earthquake strikes while you are driving on the middle of a lonely country road and the roads are destroyed so you are stranded out in the middle of nowhere, you will have to deal with a variety of dangers.

One of these dangers may be the local wild animals. However, if you can stay in your car until help arrives, you should be safe from these creatures.

A more sinister danger is that of other human beings who do not have a respect for public courtesy. As Hurricane Katrina showed, the police will not be able to protect you and there will be human predators that will appear.

These predators may be looking for a variety of things. Prepare ahead of time to be able to defend yourself in case of an emergency.

Pepper spray is a compact weapon that can help give you time to escape. It is very easy to store in a vehicle, easy to use, and effective.

There are a variety of other effective weapons that can be stored in the car as well. Before you invest in one of these weapons however, make sure that you have read the laws regarding carrying them and the instructions on how to use them properly.

In addition to all of these things, make sure that you have stored some warm clothing in your vehicle as well. When you are stranded on the road and you run out of gas, you will not be able to heat your car.

Being able to stay warm is as important as storing enough water. Stash several blankets and a coat or two under the seats.

How many coats and blankets you stash away will depend on how many people you usually drive around. You may also want to store specific things for specific people.

For example, if you have a baby, you will want to stick some extra diapers in the car. If you are prepared, you will survive the emergency until help can come.

Making A Disaster Plan

By Jack Landry

Thinking about potential disasters that could happen to you and the area where you live is not fun to do. But everyone needs to take a little bit of time once a year to talk with their family about what they should do and how they can prepare themselves in an emergency.

Coming up with a disaster plan with your family might seem overwhelming at first but if you break it up into steps, it will become a realistic goal. The first thing you need to determine is what kind of disasters you are susceptible to in the area where you live.

For example, if you live in California, you better have earthquakes on your list of potential disasters. If you live in Kansas, put down tornadoes.

The states that are on the Gulf Coast needs to talk about what they should do in the event of hurricanes. Depending on where you live, there are some disasters that are more prevalent than others.

Things like fires and floods can happen in a lot of different places, so it might be smart to include those on your list no matter where you live. After you have listed each individual disaster, then talk about them and plan it out one at a time.

Ask yourself what you should do if there was an earthquake. You can look up very good tips on how to organize yourselves on your city website.

Each town should have a disaster plan and will be able to direct you as to where you should go and where the safest ground is. They will also have emergency numbers that you can call to get information and help.

They may be able to give you some evacuation maps about your local area and explain to you how the local warning systems work. You may need to do some research on your own about what preparations you need to do in order to survive certain disasters.

Agree upon a meeting spot for your family that everyone knows how to get to in case of an emergency. Figure out a way for all family members to get into contact with each other to make sure each individual is accounted for.

Discuss different disasters scenarios with your family and ask them what they should do in those situations. What happens if only one person knows the plan and what to do?

What if that one person were seriously injured or killed during the disaster? This is why it is important for all family members to understand what to do and be able to follow an agreed upon plan just in case someone did not make it.

Go through your home with your whole family and inspect it for any potential hazards that you might find. Ask your family what you should do to fix it and then do it.

For example, check out all the smoke detectors to make sure they are on and have batteries. You should test them at least once a month to make sure they are working.

Buy some fire extinguishers to put in certain parts of the home including the kitchen, family room next to the fireplace, garage and possibly your backyard. Have everyone practice using them and make sure that everyone knows where to grab one if the need ever arises.

Enroll your family in basic life saving technique course such as CPR and first aid. You can take a class every couple of years to get certified.

Assemble a disaster kit that includes at least a seven day supply of food and water. The longer you can make your kit last, the better.

Remember to include any medications, first aid supplies and anything else you might need in case of an emergency. Show everyone how to turn off gas, electricity and water if the house gets damage in the disaster or if there is a gas leak.

Have a backup plan and post it up where everyone else can read it and become familiar with it. You might want to practice it a couple of times because you never know when you are going to need it.

The History of Today\’s Gourmet Coffee

By Mimi Naghshineh

“Coffee is the common man’’s gold, and like gold, it brings to every person the feeling of luxury and nobility.” - Sheik Abd-al-Qadir

Think about the last cup of coffee you drank. Was it a gourmet coffee blend from Starbucks Coffee? Or maybe a pot you brewed at home such as Maxwell House? Now answer this question: Where did it originate from? Chances are the response will be a wild guess or an “I don”t know”.

According to the International Coffee Organization’’s Executive Director, the amount of coffee consumed worldwide throughout 2009 reached roughly 132 million bags. Nearly 21.5 million of those bags could be attributed to consumption in just the United States, which is more than any other single country. Of those avid coffee drinkers, most will admit knowing very little about the history and origin of the tantalizing beverage.

The exact beginnings remain unclear. Legends tell of an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi who, in c.850, noticed the energizing effects his flock experienced after eating the bright red berries from a local shrub. After experimenting with the berries himself, Kaldi brought the berries to a nearby Muslim holy man. However, the holy man disapproved of their use and threw them into a fire. Suddenly an enticing aroma began to fill the air. The roasted beans were then raked from the glowing embers, ground, and dissolved in hot water, creating the world’’s first cup of coffee.

Although this tale has emerged as an entertaining speculation, the earliest credible evidence of either knowledge of the coffee tree or coffee drinking comes from mid-fifteenth century southern Arabia in the Sufi monasteries around Mocha (or Mokha), Yemen. It was here that coffee beans were first roasted and brewed similarly to how they are today. It is rumored that the Arab word ”qahwah”, stemming from the verb ”gahiya”, signifying “to have no hunger”, was the first name given to what is known as ”coffee” in today’’s English language.

In 1587 Abd al-Qadir al-Jazirir, who may be considered one of the most important early coffee writers, compiled a work tracing the history and legal controversies of coffee. A translation of this work maps the spread of coffee from Yemen north to Mecca and Medina, then on to the larger cities of Cairo, Damascus, Baghdad, and Istanbul. Historians place the first established coffeehouse in Constantinople (today’’s Istanbul). There is some controversy regarding the exact time and location. Various legends tell of place known as ”Kiva Han” that was opened in the late fifteenth century. However, the Ottoman historian Ibrahim Pecevi reported that in 1555 “a fellow called Hakam from Aleppo and a wag called Shams from Damascus came to the city; they each opened a large shop in the district called Tahtakale, and began to purvey coffee.”

The immense amount of trade between Venice and the Muslims in North Africa, Egypt and the East brought a variety of goods to Europe, including coffee. Coffee-drinking was introduced as something prestigious to wealthy Venetians which, in turn, allowed merchants to charge heavily. At this time controversy arose regarding whether or not it was acceptable to consume during Lent. Thankfully Pope Clement VIII settled the dispute in 1600, ruling that it was. Coffee’’s popularity in Europe continued to grow and then, in 1645, the first European coffeehouse was opened in Venice.

Shortly after the opening of this coffeehouse in Venice, the first English coffeehouse, Oxford’’s Queen’’s Lane Coffee House, was established. The business is still in existence to this day, attracting connoisseurs and enthusiasts from around the world. At this time coffeehouses were known as ”penny universities” because a penny was charged for admission and a cup of coffee. It was here that the concept of tipping was formed. Signs reading ”To Insure Promptitude” were placed by a tin. Those patrons desiring prompt service and better seating threw coins into the tin. And so, the word ”tip” was created.

Coffee continued to spread like wildfire throughout Europe. At the end of the seventeenth century the Dutch became the first to commercially transport and cultivate the plants. In fact, they were among the first to defy the Arab prohibition on the exportation of unroasted seeds or plants by smuggling seedlings from the port of Mocha to the Dutch East Indies. The first attempt at cultivation in Java and Ceylon, Indonesia, was met with such success that the Dutch East India Company was able to supply the demand in Europe with ”Java coffee” by 1719.

About a year later seedlings found their way to Martinique in the Caribbean thanks to a French naval officer. Some fifty years later there were nearly 20,000 coffee trees on the island. In the meantime, coffee had made its way to Brazil by around 1727. A man named Francisco de Mello Palheta was sent to French Guinea by the Emperor of Brazil with strict instructions to obtain viable seeds. After some initial struggle and a few near-death experiences, Francisco succeeded in seducing the French Governor’’s wife who, in turn, secretly sent seeds and shoots to him in Brazil. This initiated the Brazilian coffee industry, although it didn”t begin to truly prosper until a century later.

Coffee continued to grow and spread throughout South and then Central America until it finally reached North America during the Colonial period. Although one would assume that as soon as it reached North America this delectable beverage would quickly gather momentum, this was not the case. Interestingly enough, alcoholic beverages remained much more popular. However, when the Revolutionary War hit, the increased alertness that came from drinking coffee caused its demand to soar. When the British cut off access to tea imports during the War of 1812, Americans” taste for coffee grew. That paired with the amplified demand during the American Civil War and brewing technological advances, later followed by prohibition, sealed coffee’’s fate as an everyday commodity in the United States.

Today there are numerous blends, brands and brews that range from instant to premium or gourmet coffee. Some of the top-selling national brands are Maxwell House and Folgers Coffee while the premium names include Starbucks Coffee and Caribou Coffee. No matter the name, though, the historical journey holds true for all. So the next time you pour yourself a cup of gourmet coffee or order that caramel macchiato at the Starbucks drive-through, take a moment to appreciate those who made such delicious beverages not only possible, but everyday necessities in many people’’s lives.

Storing Clean Water for an Emergency

By Jack Landry

The storage of water is one of the most critical elements in properly preparing for an emergency. The amount of clean water you have access to during an emergency can greatly affect whether or not you are able to survive.

You can contract severe diseases from contaminated water that will be untreatable with the stretched medical services and emergency services. Risking disease is not a point you should come to at any point during an emergency situation.

Avoid risking disease by properly preparing for a potential disaster. You do not necessarily have to purchase the bottled water from the store to store.

If you have empty liters of soda or water jugs, fill these with water from the tap if you receive city water. Do not use empty milk jugs as the milk is very difficult to clean out.

Spring or well water also should not be used as storage water. They tend to have bacteria and other things in it that can become harmful if they are stored over a long period of time.

Even if you treat you water system or use purification pitchers, not all of the potentially harmful things in the water will be removed. However, a taken care of municipal water supply can be used in storage.

If your water supply is not properly taken care of, the quality of your water may even be worse than it was originally. Contaminants tend to build up in a water system if the system is not cleaned regularly, which will add contaminants into the water instead of removing them like it should.

The only type of personal water supply system that might be safe to store would be water systems properly installed that use methods such as distillation or osmosis. However, these systems are fairly expense and most people will not have access to these things.

When you treat water for contaminants, it is best if the water is already at drinkable standards. The best homemade way to clean water is to use some liquid household chlorine bleach with 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite.

Other bleaches or soaps should not be added to drinking water. Use a clean medicine dropper to drop four drops of the bleach per quart or liter container of water.

Eight drops of bleach should be used for every 2-quart, 2-liter, or 1/2 gallon container of water. 16 drops of bleach, or the equivalent of 1/4 teaspoon, should be used for every gallon or 4 liter container of water.

After adding the bleach, stir the water to make sure that it is completely mixed in. Let the water stand for 30 minutes.

If you added the correct amount, you should be able to smell the chlorine in the water at the end of the 30 minutes. However, if the water does not smell like chlorine, add the bleach again and let it sit for another 15 minutes after stirring.

When the water is done, put the lids on the containers and mark when you cleaned and began storing the water. Due to the chlorines ability to corrode most metals, water that is to be stored in metal containers should not need to be cleaned.

This water should already be pure and clean. Then, place the containers in a cool, but dry, place that is not directly in the sunlight during any part of the day.

Most plastic containers degrade over time. This makes them weaker and more susceptible to breaking and leaking the water.

To protect these containers so that they will not develop leaks it is best to keep the containers out of the heat. It is also best to store these containers away from gasoline, kerosene, pesticides and anything else that may give of a hydrocarbon vapor.

Hydrocarbon vapor can move through the polyethylene plastics and contaminate your water. You will also want to make sure that the shelves you will be storing water on are strong enough to carry the weight.

Water is very heavy. A typical gallon of water will weigh more the eight pounds.

In addition, you will not want your water to get too old. The best quality of water should always be stored.

When the water on your shelves gets too old, you will need to replace it. Commercially provided water usually contains an expiration date that the water should be replaced by.

Water is one of the key and most critical components of you food storage supply.

Building An Emergency Kit

By Jack Landry

You probably have not thought about the essential items that should go into a first aid kit since you were in boy scouts. Nowadays, you can find completed first aid kits already packed up and ready to buy.

They may be a little bit more expensive to buy ready-made, but a lot more convenient. Usually, these pre-made kits have everything that you would need in them to take care of small wounds.

They pack them so tiny and small that they do not have much room in them to include the bigger things. It can become a cute little carry on that you can decorate and tends to lose some of its more practical purposes.

If you want to build a real first aid kit, then what should you include inside it? There are several things that you will want to make sure that you fit inside of your emergency kit.

The first thing you should look at is the bandages. There are many types of bandages in all kinds of sizes.

You can buy a pack of small band aids that cover anything from a small prick in the finger to a huge gash on your arm. A good suggestion might be to make sure you have one or two bandages in each size instead of buying a whole box that only has one size.

Not only do you need to look at the different sizes of bandages, but also the type of bandages. There are some that have adhesive on the backs and some that stretch to wrap around the wound.

For smaller wounds, bandages with adhesive on the back usually work quite well. Whereas for larger wounds, you will want something that you can wrap around it a few times to help soak up any blood and cover the whole area.

Whoever is helping take care of the wounds will also need some type of protection so that they do not get any blood or other bodily fluids on them. Putting a couple pairs of latex gloves into your kit will help solve this problem.

The next thing you should consider are different types of cream such as; antibiotic ointment, burn ointment, and anti-itch cream. Just having a small bottle of each one to put in your kit is better than having a huge bottle of only one kind.

You never know what you are going to need, so if you have a good variety of stuff then you will be better prepared. Make sure that you have both tweezers and a good pair of scissors.

A pocket knife that includes both of these things would be even better because it will have a knife and be stored a lot safer than the scissors by themselves. Pocket knives fold up really well and you can find one that will everything you will ever need on it.

As far as non-prescription medicines go, you should have a few tablets of pain reliever and fever reducers. Never give out any prescription medicine to someone that is was not meant for.

Eye wash solution and cleansing soap would be very useful to put into your kit. You want to be able to wash and disinfect the wounded area so that the victim will not get any bacterial infections.

Some other small items to include in your kit are; thermometer, ice pack, non stick sterile pads, tube of lubricant, CPR mask, and an antihistamine for allergic reactions. You just need one of each of these items to put into your bag.

Bigger items that people usually do not even think about are things such as; a blanket, ready to eat foods, water, and flashlight with extra batteries. You never know what kind of condition your patient is going to be in or what kind of help they will need, so having all of things in a small backpack will come in handy in whatever situation you may find yourself in.

One last item that you should keep in your first aid kit is an old cell phone. Whether or not the cell phone is in service, it is always able to call 911 for an emergency- just make sure it has some battery life.

A Brief Introduction To Dining Etiquette

By Cheow Yu Yuan

Dining etiquette has always been important. People are generally judged about their cultural level depending on how elegantly they eat and use silverware. The rules for silverware have evolved for many years. Correct posture is very important. One needs to sit up straight, not too close and not too far from the table. Keep elbows off the table. The napkin should be folded in half and placed on the lap to protect clothing from any unexpected spills.

The dining etiquette is very detailed about everything. For example, the roles of different pieces of silverware are very precise. The knife only “assists” the fork. It is wrong to cut everything with the knife at once. It is appropriate to cut small, bite-size pieces one at a time. Breads also should be broken off by bite-size pieces. To spread butter, the piece of bread should be held with left hand on the side of the plate for convenience.

There is a long list of rules on how to eat soup. First of all, there is a special spoon for soups. The soup should be eaten from the edge of the spoon, holding it parallel to the mouth. When there is a little left in the bowl, it should be titled away. Then it is easier to fill the spoon with the remaining soup. Second course etiquette requires more wisdom. The knife should be held in right hand, handle in the palm, index finger placed where the blade begins. The fork in left hand, index finger placed where the fork just begins to curve.
When cutting food, the utensils should be angled slightly. When utensils are on the plate parallel to each that, it is a signal that one is done with the meal. There are special utensils for different dishes, such as fish, seafood, meat and poultry. There are special silverware for desserts and snacks. For dishes that do not need to be cut, only forks should be used. If necessary, break off a piece of bread and “help” to put food on the fork.

When it comes to drinks, there is one rule: the stronger is the drink, the smaller is the glass. The glasses are usually placed in the following order in the front of the plate: a champagne glass, a glass for red wine, a glass for white wine, a glass for fortified drinks, a glass for vodka and a glass for juice or water.

Dining etiquette is not only the rules for eating at the table. It is the ability to make a good impression on others while socializing during a meal.

Finding the Best Caterer for Your Funeral Program

By Terry Daniels

If you are planning a funeral program, chances are you are in need of a good caterer. Finding a caterer who will meet your needs while staying within your budget can be a tricky process.

However, with the right amount of direction and a little preparation, presenting the perfect meal to your guests doesn”t have to give you a nervous breakdown during an already stressful time. Here are some simple things you should think about as you consider beginning to search plan your service.

During a time that is generally full of grief, the last thing you need is to encounter bumps and problems along the road. Make sure that your caterer knows the situation, and will be sensitive.

First, plan out exactly what your budget for food will be. Be sure to factor in tax, servers, and tips as you search for companies which will match your price range.

Prices will differ greatly depending upon if you want a buffet style meal, or a sit-down served meal. Which kind of food service will best fit with the mood of your program?

Be sure to speak to multiple caterers about price, so you will get an accurate idea of what is reasonable. Some companies will even price match if you give them competition to compare to.

Find out what their payment terms will be, and what kind of tax and service charges they require. If you get all of the information up front, you won”t encounter any problems when it is time to settle the bill.

One of the greatest things that factors into expense is the type of food you are serving. For example, a grilled salmon meal will end up being much more expensive than a simple chicken dish.

If you are set on a certain caterer but are not happy with the cost, think about changing your menu slightly to bring the price down. Chicken dishes can be very elegant, and just as satisfactory to your guests.

Make sure that you talk to the company about their quality of food. Where does it come from?

There are companies out there who use frozen or canned foods to create their meals. If this is not something that is acceptable to you, be sure to talk to them beforehand about what their plan is.

While you may not think of it, there are also companies which do not supply any kind of dishes, silverware, tablecloths, napkins, cups, or anything else to accompany the food. This may or may not be your responsibility, depending on the policy of the company.

If they do provide these services, you need to discuss with them in detail what their presentation will be. After all, you may expect an elegant setup, and they come with chafing dishes that look cheap, plain, or damaged.

If you are not happy with the look of the serving equipment, sometimes it is possible to substitute it with your own products. You can often buy inexpensive, elegant serving equipment from stores like Costco, or other home brands.

Another thing to be aware of as you shop for a caterer, is their staff. Be sure to tell them exactly how many guests will be attending your event, as this will directly determine the number of servers that are needed.

Servers are either paid by the hour, or by the entire event. A rule of thumb to follow is one server to every ten guests.

While this may seem excessive, it will ensure that your guests are well taken care of, and places are cleared away in a timely manner. You may want to find out the ages of the servers, to make sure that they fit with your event.

Since you are trying to present a serious funeral program, you may not want sixteen year old kids trying to take care of your guests. Make sure that you are going to receive the level of professionalism that you are paying for.

When it comes to leftovers, find out beforehand exactly what is done with them. Some caters have been known to throw out entire bags of good, unused meat and other food when the program is over.

Others will simply box them up and take them back. Technically, you have paid for the food, and it is yours.

You can arrange for them to box up the leftovers in your own Tupperware and save it for yourself. Don”t expect this to happen if you haven”t discussed it beforehand.

As you can see, there are lots of questions which need to be discussed with your caterer well before your service. Do your homework beforehand, come prepared, be ready to take notes, and you will have no problem finding the perfect event staff.

The Benefits Of The Raw Food Diet

By Lance Thorington

Have you heard of the raw food diet? There are many advantages to adopting this diet and this article aims to discuss the benefits of the raw food diet.

The raw food diet of course, consists of a vegetable diet. This extremely valuable in many ways. First of all, vegetables are gentle for the bowel system. You do not overwork your bowels when you consume vegetables, especially if this is your main diet.

If you are prone to constipation, this raw diet cannot be more highly recommended for you. You should certainly cut down on spices and food that is considered ”heaty”. Even more importantly, you should make vegetables abundant in your diet. Someone who constipates regularly should seriously consider a change in diet; one that incorporates low fat raw vegan. Have no time for fruits? Vegetables are the substitute for you.

If you like, you can consume your raw diet in a glass; in juice form. Once or twice a day and you can imagine how much good this does to your body. If you will further notice, your mind actually stays more alert.

Have you been complaining of fatigue or plain tiredness? Then the low fat raw diet is made for you. Stop accumulating the toxins in your body or at least minimize it. The great thing about the vegan diet is that it can rebalance your body in this respect as well. You will quickly notice that your energy level is higher than before and you seem to be able to do more with less.

Incorporating the low fat raw vegan diet into your lifestyle is not as hard as it may at first seem. Have you noticed that anything new always seems hard at first? All this means that you have a mental block and nothing else. As soon as you start to accept the stuff that you consider new, the block begins to soften and before you know it, you may even be advocating it to people you know and love.

This particular diet cannot be too highly recommended. Pay attention to your body and sense if there is any discomfort; whether physical or mental. You may very well ease this discomfort with a simple change of your diet. The vegan diet can do wonders to the system within your body and you will wonder why didn”t you start sooner.

It is however, not too late. As soon as you adopt this diet as part of your lifestyle, you will begin to feel the difference in you in a short period of time. What is a few short weeks compared to months or even years of unease? Some people report to experience the difference even sooner than that.

Preparing Your Car for a Disaster

By Terry Daniels

A disaster could strike at any time. This means that you need to be prepared at all times to fend for yourself.

An earthquake will not wait for you to drive home to be with your food storage, medical kit, extra clothing, and warm blankets. It could strike when you are driving alone on a country road.

Severe enough earthquakes will leave the road broken and impassable by a car. In this situation you could find yourself stranded with no town close enough to walk to or the supplies that you need to survive.

It is important to prepare for this kind of scenario well before it strikes. However, if you find yourself in this stranded with your car due to a natural disaster, there are several things you should do.

The first thing you need to do is realize that help is not coming to you. Emergency services are often stretched to the limit without a natural disaster striking.

When a natural disaster strikes, all of a sudden 10,000 to 100,000 people may be demanding the services of these emergency personnel. It is very unlikely that the help you need will be able to come to you, especially if the roads are bad.

One of the things you should have prepared before the disaster struck was your car. You car should be full of gas with all of the necessary repairs and maintenance tasks up to date.

You should have also stored necessary emergency items such as a first aid kit, water, food, and clothing that can protect you from the elements. There are many different types of packaged food that can be stored for a long time which are available to the general public now.

These things include MRE’’s and freeze dried foods. These packages take up very little space and can be conveniently stored in the car.

The more severe the climate you live in, the more early preparation will need to go into what you store in your car. Cold is your worst enemy in a survival situation.

Make sure you have warm coats for yourself and anyone else who you may be traveling with. Water is also a worst enemy.

A human will die without water in a matter of only a few days. Make sure you have these things with you in the car.

Another thing you should make sure is in the car is at least one flashlight. Try to purchase one that you can shake or wind to produce the energy needed to create light.

However, long life flashlights that rely on batteries are acceptable as well as long as you also store extra batteries. In a pinch, a flashlight can be an invaluable tool for self-defense.

Use it to blind the guy and run away or use it as a club. Whichever way you end up using your flashlight, you will not want to be without one.

Flares should also be a necessary part of your emergency car kit. Even with no other drivers on the road, they can serve as signals for help.

You may also want to develop some medical skills, even if you do not think you ever want to be a doctor. In an emergency, you may be the only hope for saving someone who has been injured.

When this situation comes along, you will wish desperately that you had been properly prepared. Remember that an injured or sick person should especially be kept warm, dry, and hydrated.

In this kind of situation it is very likely that you will rely on your car as your shelter. Place a roll of duck tape in the car to make repairs should you get into a small accident or wreck.

This will allow the car to still serve as appropriate shelter even if the window breaks. Duck tape can also fix a whole variety of other things.

As you will be relying on your car so much, pack a ”medical kit” for the car. This kit may include radiator fluid, tire inflator/sealant, a multipurpose tool, a screwdriver, and so forth.

It has also been shown that during an emergency, self-defense items are an absolute must. There are several options available to you including a gun, pepper spray, and something that works as a club or baton.

You will need to become familiar with the specific rules regarding storage and carrying of these weapons. It will also be very important that you learn how to properly use it or the bad guy will disarm you right away.

By taking these things into consideration and properly preparing, you will be prepared to survive any disaster.
