Healthy Living: Tips on Eating Right In Your Apartment
By Trey Huguley
If your apartment is anything like mine, it”s extremely comfortable and makes it very easy to veg out on the couch and watch your waist line grow. It takes a little discipline to put down the potato chips and get in gear, but you can do it. A healthy lifestyle will not only help you look better, but you will also FEEL better. Both of these betters, will make you a happier and improve your overall quality of life.
There are a number of ways to promote healthy living other than just hitting the gym. It all starts with getting in good habits while you eat. To get you on the right track, here are a few common good eating ideas to follow:
1.)Eat Dinner Before 7:30 and try to cut your portion size. Most people eat one of their largest meals at dinner and then sit on the couch for the rest of the night. Doing this later than 7:30 can be one of the worst things for you. If you cut your portion size, eat early and try to be more active in the evening, you are less likely to expand your waist as much.
2.)Do Not Snack After Dinner or within 3 hours of bedtime. Your body needs time to digest your last meal and burn off some of that food before you go to sleep. If you eat too close to bedtime, you are much less active after eating and your body is more likely to store fat.
3.)Avoid eating too many sugar items, starches, and fats…yes….this includes beer, french fries, potato chips and cake. All of these items can be okay in fine moderation, but if you make a habit of eating anything high in sugar, starch and fat and it can be disastrous to your waist line and health.
4.) Avoid Overeating- Listen to your body and when you feel full…STOP EATING. Save the left-overs for the family dog. Before getting a second helping, let your body rest for a few minutes and see how full you feel. Most of the time, the fullness just hadn”t hit you yet. Portion control can be a valuable weapon in the battle for your health.
5.) Snack Attack- Before snacking, really evaluate your hunger level and think about when was your last and when is your next meal. Often you”re just thirsty or bored and a glass of water or an activity will help you get over the snack attack. If you find yourself really needing a snack at your desk, try fresh fruit or shelled sunflower seeds. Both are great snacking items that can suppress your hunger. Just like anything else though…snack in moderation.
6.) Chew More- It”s a proven fact that if you chew more, you will end up eating less. So count your chews and make sure you chew at least 20 times for every bite. This will in turn help you eat slower and give your body time to react to ingesting food and feel full.
All of these eating tips are great at helping you eat right. You may be very health savvy and already know all of these tips, but hopefully these very basic tips help out those who weren”t aware. A healthy lifestyle in your apartment really isn”t that difficult if you give it a little effort. The results will be well worth it.
