The Importance of Preparedness

By Destry Masterson

It is much like the story of the ant and the grasshopper. The grasshopper spends all day playing his fiddle or his lute or whatever it was he played, and all the ants listened while they gathered food for the winter.

Mr. Grasshopper wasn”t too concerned about the winter because “heck, the sustenance dispenses in such great abundance now, that it is unimaginable to think that things could ever not be like this”. Now the ant must have thought the grasshopper a colloquial indolent for his crude understanding of nature and the flow of prosperity and loss.

December comes and sure enough the grasshopper has no food so he goes to the ant and asks for some. Of course the ant only gathered enough for himself, so he shoos the grubby beggar to the dark clutches of merciless winter.

The moral: the ant gets to listen to music and survive through the winter. The point of this story is to promote awareness to preparedness.

If you are not prepared then you are simply and essentially no better than a grasshopper. If you look through history then you can see that basically every lifetime or so there is some sort of major catastrophe that breaks everything and leaves people running frantic.

Just 80 years ago there was the great depression that had most grasshoppers eaten by the starving people that couldn”t get food anywhere else. It is ridiculous to think that everything will stay as nice as it is now.

In fact, that would be an ignorant thing to think, how is it possible that now all of a sudden everything is impenetrable or unbreakable? Actually with the country of America in the state it”s in, catastrophe is closer than many would be willing to admit.

The nation stands on the brink of madness between financial collapse and trying to police the world. It is time to rethink your security.

If you think you are safe it is time that you second guess yourself. These days you can never be too safe unless you have an underground layer and radars to measure the happenings up on the earth”s surface.

Realistically, most people are not going to be able to afford a comfortable underground layer. So what you should do is just stock up on some good food storage.

Try to get a diversity of wheat, rice and maybe some honey for flavor. That would be the best thing to do when the nation starts to collapse among the calamity of a third world war.

Good luck, be prepared, and do not allow yourself to be like the lazy grasshopper that just plays his lute all day. Unless, of course, you play the lute professionally then that is a different case.

Using Cigar Lighters To Skin Tomatoes

By Bryan Smythe

How do you go about skinning a tomato with a cooking torch? You may laugh out loud at the idea, but it is interesting to note that cigar lighters are actually becoming the gourmet”s “tool of choice” for many kitchen processes. From browning the top of a gorgeous meringue to putting the finishing touches on a flawlessly cooked steak, these high-quality torches are amazingly helpful.

So, back to the question about cigar lighters and tomato skins…if you have ever had to peel tomatoes you know that there are really only two ways it happens. You can score the bottom with a small X, put the tomato into a pan of boiling water, let the skin loosen for a few moments and then quickly pull the tomato out of the water and plunge it into icy cold water. After that you have to roll up your sleeves and begin pulling the now puckered skin off of the fruit. Messy, cold, and no fun at all!

If you are not using torch lighters in order to peel the skins from tomatoes, it means that you are using the regular method of boiling and submerging the fruit in an ice bath. Here”s how that works: you score the bottom of every tomato with an X, you submerge them into the boiling water bath and estimate the amount of time needed to loosen the skin, you pull the tomatoes from the boiling water and slip them into a pre-made ice water bath. You wait a bit for the fruit to cool and you then begin to work at removing the skin by hand. Lots of guesswork and even some extra work to get skin that wasn”t properly loosened from the fruit, not a nice job to tackle.

How? Picture this approach – you jab the tomato on the end of a meat fork or skewer and then use one of the high quality cigar lighters to begin blistering the skin and forcing it to peel from the flesh. This is similar to the roasting described above, but is far more targeted and accurate. The result is a nearly mess-free experience in which the skin peels away from the tomato with great ease, and often in only one or two large pieces.

Clearly, you can put on your “thinking cap” and find many different ways to use cigar lighters in the kitchen. If you are facing a pile of summer tomatoes that are destined to become sauce, or looking to make a delicious bruschetta, or even just a nice tomato salad, this is certainly one of the smartest and easiest tactics to use. It is also an approach that saves a lot of time and messiness in the kitchen!

The Health Advantages Of Dehydrating Food

By Johnathon F Black

In a historical sense, food dehydration dates back to ancient times when it was a serious need and not a cookery delicacy in the society. However, the contemporary systems of food preservation, which include canning, chemical additives, drying, freezing, pasteurizing, pickling, and refrigeration, have somehow brought the traditional practice of dehydration into disappearance. In spite of numerous food storage technologies present today, dehydration is still one of the most cost-effective, nourishing, nontoxic, and flavor-saving means of food preservation.

What is interesting about food dehydration is that it merely takes a little investment of one”s resources and time in order to store and preserve fruits, meats, and vegetables safely. Furthermore, several fresh fruits and vegetables cannot undergo some processes of food preservation such as canning and freezing, which is why it is advisable that you just adhere to dehydration when it comes to preserving your foodstuff.

Unlike other modes of food preservation, dehydration is more beneficial in a way that it lowers the moisture content of the food, which in turn prevents bacteria, chemical reactions, mold, and yeast from spoiling the food. In addition, it also considerably preserves the nutrients and the flavor of the food, which is undeniably advantageous if you are planning to travel long distances.

Currently, there are many models of food dehydrators available in the market, and they come in plastic or steel chassis material. Its price ranges from $100 to $350, and it typically bases from the product”s machine construction and the holding capacity of its drying trays. However, it is worth noting that the cost of the machine is definitely economical in contrast to the amount of time and resources that you can save by using it.

Typically, dehydration involves a drying process that gets rid of the water content in the food, which is essential to preserve it for a longer period without any aid of refrigeration. Athletes, campers, and travelers are often the ones who use dehydrated food, principally for the reason that its advantages can significantly help them throughout their activities.

Another advantage of the dehydration process is that it minimally influences the nutritional value of foods. Nutrients such as carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, sodium, and vitamins A and C do not transgress in dehydration, unlike in canning or freezing.

Additionally, dehydrated foods that are properly stored usually have a longer shelf life than any other techniques present. In fact, if one correctly seals and leaves the food unopened, it can stay for 15-20 years.

People Love Personalized Chocolate Wedding Favors

By Phoenix Delray

People love having personalized chocolate wedding favors. These are available in many different styles and flavors. Many couples are using them in creative ways to accessorize their celebrations and give them a unique style.

More companies are offering these products than ever before. Some are from well known chocolatiers. Others are from companies that specialize in wedding party accessories. They are available in almost every flavor of chocolate ranging from smooth milk chocolate to dark bittersweet varieties. Some of these have flavored fillings like strawberry, cherry or orange.

Many of the shapes are unique. There are ones that mimic the shapes of cake toppers in that they have a bride and groom standing side by side. These can also be found in many natural shapes like butterflies or flowers.

Some of these are more like cookies than candies. There are ones that look like the midsections of a bride and groom that have Madeleines inside of them. Others may have biscotti inside and be formed in the shapes of bars. These sometimes have confetti style sprinkles or decorations with xes and os to signify hugs and kisses. Some of these are only available in one flavor of chocolate while others may give buyers several options.

The prices for these can vary from place to place. Compared to other types of favors, they are reasonably priced. Because each seller will generally have completely different kinds, it is somewhat hard to do a price comparison. Buyers will have to look a the ounces to determine the cost but also need to consider what types of chocolate or other ingredients are used. The higher quality chocolate may cost more than other types.

Some of these can be found with discounts depending on how many are ordered. These are usually available quickly but if there is a large amount needed, a custom order or any back orders involved, it may take a bit longer. Couples may want to scout prices and services well in advance of their reception in order to make sure that they can obtain the ones that they want.

Depending on style and budget, some couples will mix things up. They may use the chocolate favors for attendants and close family members while opting for regular candy for other attendees. Others will purchase chocolate for everyone. Some will get the less expensive chocolate for most guests and the higher priced ones for family. Personalized chocolate wedding favors are something almost everyone can enjoy.

Using Cigar Lighters For Gratins

By Bryan Smythe

Though a gratin is actually a type of cooking vessel, we call a lot of different dishes “gratins” as well. Usually they are combinations of vegetables and creamy or cheesy sauces. These are dishes that emerge from the oven all bubbly and delicious, but a lot of cooks and chefs are challenged to make their gratins visually appealing. This is because the steam from the vegetables and sauce tends to prevent any toppings from browning nicely. If they leave the dish in the oven long enough for the topping to brown, however, the lovely texture of the vegetables and sauce tends to be ruined. Thus, the use of torch lighters is becoming commonplace in the preparation of gratins.

How can torch lighters cook a gratin? They don”t; instead they put that highly desirable “finishing touch” to the surface of the dish. Here”s how it works: let”s say you made a cauliflower gratin that became incredibly “fluid” as it cooked. The pan may have even spilled over to the oven floor or to the baking sheet you were clever enough to use. This means that the cheese and crumb topping required in the recipe may have a gooey or uncooked look and texture. This also means the topping won”t taste so great either. So, you pull the dish from the oven when it is done cooking and you consider the options. That”s when you reach for the torch.

Remember, however, that your adjustable cigar lighters are also going to cook the foods as well. This means that you might use them for color, but they will melt, braise, blister or bubble the food too. This is why they are an ideal device to use when making a gratin. Here”s what we mean: the average gratin involves the base food such as a potato or vegetable. This is then mixed with the sauce that includes dairy and cheeses that will melt and bubble during the cooking process. Most gratin recipes call for crumbs of some kind to ensure that the top is crispy and brown.

Just consider that you can pull a gratin from the oven and let it cool a bit, then take one of the high quality butane lighters available and use it as a tool to give the top of the gratin that desirable color. You might also wait to put the topping of cheese and crumbs on the dish until you remove it from the oven and then use the lighter to cause the cheese to melt, bubble, and brown as well.

Yes, you can also put torch lighters to work when a meringue, piece of meat, or dessert needs a bit of color or final cooking (such as the caramelization process of sugar) but cannot remain completely immersed in heat any longer. Now you may understand how they are becoming a preferred kitchen tool as well as something used to light top quality cigars!

Where is the Best Place to Buy Restaurant Supplies?

By John Park

If you are planning to open a restaurant, make sure you have a source of readily available restaurant supplies. Restaurant supplies are items that you will require replacement of frequently, such as paper goods, tableware, cookware, et al. You do not want to spend a lot of time frequently tracking down supplies for your restaurant. There are some solutions for tracking down a restaurant supply dealer in your area. Please keep in mind this is not all the ways possible, but its a good place to start.

The most common way today to locate restaurant suppliers is to search online. Make sure you find a reputable dealer to avoid frustration or delay. Look to the Better Business Bureau and make sure there are no eye popping complaints. If you do see any complaints, make sure you keep in mind that every business has a few unhappy customers. Try to remove ones from your list that make this a pattern. You will save a great deal of time when you use this search tool.

The good old Yellow Pages are still a place to look for local dealers. Local dealers will have the convenience of same day stock, but will often come at a higher price and a limited number of options to choose from when compared to the great online dealers. Online dealers will typically have the best options and prices available, but you will have to wait for shipping.

You should also attend local commercial restaurant industry trade shows to obtain information about various restaurant suppliers” products and services. You will have access to supplier literature and even talk to restaurant supplier representatives. This is a great way to weed out companies that you may not want to do business with.

Try visiting restaurant business association websites for news about restaurant supplies and suppliers. You will learn about the restaurant supply companies that are holding equipment trade shows and conferences. A couple of these sites are the National Restaurant Association website and the Prime Equipment Auction and Realty website. One can usually find discounted restaurant supplies and equipment. As well, each state will have their own Restaurant Association Website where they provide news and trends on local commercial restaurant supply companies. You should sign up to receive newsletters about restaurant supply news and trends by email. There are also news agencies and restaurant magazines that track trends in the restaurant supply industry. Two such websites are Smart Brief and Restaurant and Institutions Magazine.

What Kind of Restaurant Should I Open?

By John Park

You are considering opening a restaurant, but you are unsure of what type of food to feature and a theme. Try to feature something unique to your area. Choose the basic theme, and then add your own ideas and and decor for an interesting mix. Your decor and style should match your menu items.

Restaurants are usually placed into three groups:

1. Fast Food – Economy

Fast food restaurants usually have drive through windows or take out counters and offer food items that are pre prepared, or limited items that can be prepared quickly. So long as you don”t have a franchise, you can incorporate your own theme into this concept with your unique flavors and decor. These are American favorites. With hardly a moment to spare these days, fast food is a necessity and large profits can be made in a short period of time.

2. Mid Scale

Mid Scale restaurants offer good value meals in a casual atmosphere, and can be full service, buffet, or a limited service restaurant where the customers order at the counter and the food is delivered to them at a table. Non franchised mid-scale restaurants can reflect your theme, ideas, decor and uniforms. Typically, start up costs are more than fast food, so it takes a bit longer to recap your investments.

3. Upscale

Upscale restaurants provide elegant ambiance and full service with high priced cuisine. Upscale restaurants often incorporate a professional designer to create the look and feel of the restaurant, and multiple chefs to design a menu with unique cuisine. Again, the look and feel of the restaurant should compliment the fine cuisine.
- Asian Cuisine – Specialize in Oriental food service.
- Breakfast Restaurant – Offers good value breakfast in a casual atmosphere.
- Dry Restaurants – Do not serve liquor.
- Casual Dining – Offers casual dining at good value in a family type of theme.
- Coffee Shop – Offers coffees, teas, and sandwiches, pastries and other light take out type of meals.
- Concession – Temporary locations such as sporting events, beaches, fairs or other temporary type of engagements. The menus are limited to pre-prepared foods and snacks.
- Delicatessens – Offers take out pre-prepared types of food items such as salads, sandwiches, soups.
- Ethnic Restaurants – These restaurants offer regional ethnic dishes.
- European Restaurants- Usually specialize in French, Italian, Spanish, etc. cuisine and can be a mid range or upscale establishment.

Typically, these take the most investment, but can have huge returns if you find steady clientele.

The Cure, Prevention, and Reversal of Alzheimer\’s with Diet

By Destry Masterson

Alzheimer”s disease is very devastating to families. If a loved elderly member of the family develops this disease, it means that there will be some significant memory loss, emotional outbursts, and foolish behavior.

Common occurrences are for the patient to revert to their childhood, go places, forget things, and easily get lost and disoriented. Some patients accuse family members of stealing their things and then exhibit immature behavior.

There have been some advances in science to slow down the aging process. It has been found that citrus products, which are high in folic acid help to ease the symptoms and progress of the disease.

Other foods that are also high in folic acid are greens, extra-virgin coconut oil, grains, and fruits. These foods have been found to be very helpful to Alzheimer patients.

However, the reason folic acid works has been studied by neurologists in New England. It was found that the patients had high levels of homo-cysteine in their blood and that the folic acid helped to decrease that amount as well as the symptoms.

What causes the problem of high levels of homo-cysteine in the first place? Why do some people have this problem and is their a cure? Can Alzheimer”s be prevented and reversed?

Well, you have come to the right place for answers. Research has been done on the cure and it has been discovered by some researchers.

All you have to do is to eliminate the American diet that happens to be high in milk and dairy products. They have a high level of methionine, which results in a sulfur overload in the body.

Then, excessive homo-cysteine levels develop along with the proven connection to the development of the Alzheimer”s disease. Contrary to popular belief and current outdated educational information, milk is not a good way to try to get your calcium.

It is essentially liquid meat and actually causes osteoporosis. Your body only absorbs a little bit of calcium at a time, but if you get your calcium from plant sources, your bones will actually be stronger.

Be really careful to protect your brain from getting a bunch of holes in it similar to what happens to Swiss cheese. But, it”s not just the Swiss cheese that you need to be careful of, it”s all of the dairy products.

Watch out for milk, yogurt, cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, and ice cream if you don”t want to develop a brain disease. Take care of your family and warn all of your loved ones.

Look into this research to learn more about the studies and correlations of diet and the brain. You are what you eat, so choose carefully what you eat and what you do to yourself.
