Smell is the most powerful sense that people have; no other sense allows us such a strong association with our memories. A certain smell can very suddenly make one think of dinner at Grandma”s, a comforting hug from Mom, or even high school gym class. For many, the powerful smell of buttery popcorn transports them immediately to a time of comfort and relaxation.
The smell of popcorn oil, and the sound of popping corn, harkens many back to their favorite movie theater, remembering what it was like to watch an epic film on the big screen. For others, the smell is closer to home, remembering how they snuggled up on the couch, sharing a bowl of fluffy white kernels with Mom and Dad, as they watched “The Wizard of Oz,” or some other family show that only came around once a year.
Popcorn can carry people away to the magic of the movies, and transport them deep into subconscious memories. The sound of popping corn can make a person”s mouth water, anticipating the butter and crunch that is to come. Popcorn is one part of the larger activity of enjoying romance, action, adventure and imagination with the ones we love.
Holding a regular movie night with the kids, complete with fresh popped corn, perfect with butter popcorn seasoning, is a great way to engage in memorable family time. Simply gather the family together in a cozy room with a television front and center, then add some popcorn bags and that wonderful smell, and there is a family memory in the making.
