Preventing E Coli Food Poisoning with Important Precautions
By Destry Masterson
Many people get stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting thinking that they only have a common stomach flu, when in reality they could have e coli poisoning from some food they ate.
They don”t get this disease from being around other people, they get it from eating the same food or drinking the same milk or water. E coli is a bacteria that lives in the digestive tracts of humans and animals.
It tends to be in fertilizer, meats, eggs, and milk. If a person doesn”t wash his/her hands well after a bowel movement, there can be contamination of food or objects.
It is important to always wash your produce well. Sterilize any food preparation areas that have been in contact with any type of animal products.
You can use a solution of one quart of water and one cup of bleach to wipe a counter down. Water is usually treated prior to reaching your tap and is generally safe.
But, in the case of an earthquake or other natural disaster, it”s impossible to keep the water clean as usual. You really need to be prepared for all emergencies with water storage and cleaning supplies.
But, if you are out hiking, you should boil stream or lake water for one minute before drinking it. If not, you will need a water filter, iodine drops or bleach to sterilize the water for drinking.
In the case of the iodine drops, use 12 drops of a 2% solution of iodine to add to one gallon of water. For five gallons of water, you can add 1/2 tsp of bleach.
Usually when people get a stomach flu, they think it is something that can just be passed around like the common cold. It is more likely they are all drinking the same milk or eating the same animal products.
If you hear about people getting e coli poisoning from strawberries. It is usually because of the fertilizer containing manure or human feces that has not been washed off properly.
Or, it is because of the whipping cream that is put on the strawberries and not the strawberries themselves. The cantaloupe that may have e coli poisoning should probably be washed thoroughly on the outside before cutting.
Chicken, fish, pork, and beef should be cooked thoroughly and be kept either hot or cold. During the processing of cuts of meat, very often feces of the animal can contaminate the process.
If you do get e coli or food poisoning, it can really hurt a lot. And, it is a dangerous enough condition that you could actually die from it. It”s important to have some activated charcoal capsules on hand and to take a few with water as the need arises.
With a little preparation and caution, you can avoid getting stomach problems altogether. Take the time to figure out what is making you sick.
If you get e coli poisoning, think back over the past couple of days about what you have been eating. It can take up to three days for the e coli to give you serious symptoms.
